Wade Hunnicutt is a big man who casts a big shadow, one that looms over the Texas backwoodsmen who work his land…over the beautiful, embittered wife he cheats on…and over the sons – one from marriage and one illegitimate – who strive for their father’s respect. Robert Mitchum “gives one of his greatest performances” (Michael Barson, The Illustrated Who’s Who of Hollywood Directors) as Wade, and Vincente Minnelli directs this sprawling, emotionally volatile tale of an epic clash between generations. In early-career roles, George Peppard and George Hamilton costar as Wade’s sons, determined to be their own men, yet in danger of repeating their father’s life-crippling legacy of lust and violence.

More Minnelli on blu ray is always welcome. Warners seems to be on a Minnelli kick recently what with Designing Woman, Two Weeks In Another Town and now Home From The Hill. Hopefully, they'll tackle The Cobweb next!

Eh? You never bothered with the anamorphic wide screen DVD?
Oops, I forgot about the Robert Mitchum box set. I haven't watched the DVD since it came out many years ago. Most of my recent viewings has been streaming Warner Archive or watching TCM.

It seems that someone at Warner Archive has gone completely bonkers for Vincente Minnelli. This makes the eighth Minnelli Blu-ray release from the Archive, if you count the reissue of Meet Me in St. Louis.

I saw this film when it came out (same with Some Came Running). Both films were too mature for my young psyche, but they stayed with me for a very long time, and they remained my two favorite Minnelli melodramas. I had a chance to view them again as an adult (fortunately in 'Scope and good color), and was amazed at how much I had retained from my childhood viewings, and how well they had stood the test of time. Home from the Hill is an amazing film, quite frank for its time. Mitchum, the two Georges, and the lovely Ms. Parker deliver excellent performances. The last scene between Parker and Peppard is redemptive and ends on the right note. Perfect.

I love this film and I'm hoping "Some Came Running" isn't far behind for a Blu-ray release.

I'm with you! "Some Came Running" would be an excellent candidate for a WAC release. It's a another compelling melodrama stylishly directed by Vincente Minnelli in which Frank Sinatra gives one of his best performances -- assured and incredibly charismatic. You've also got a relaxed but focused Dean Martin, as well as Shirley MacLaine in her star-making role and Arthur Kennedy in top form. The climactic scene at a small-town carnival, with Minnelli at full throttle, is a-swirl in violent frenzy and color.

While in Oxford Mississippi I ran across this house, which was used in Home From the Hill. This what it looks like today.

I fell in love with Shirley in Some Came Running (age 8) and couldn't understand why Sinatra kept going back to that cold blonde when he had that redhead. I mean, Shirl was so much fun! I cried my eyes out at the end. She deserved that fade out into the sunset. The climactic sequence was indeed a tour-de-force, even to an eight-year-old child's eyes, who was not bored by this film. Not one bit.

I got the blu-ray of Home From the Hill a while ago when it was on sale, and finally got around to watching it a few days ago. Quite an impressive cast in this nicely restored film. I found it a difficult movie at times, but with some moments of powerful drama. I'll probably need to watch it again at some point to more fully appreciate it. Home From the Hill certainly is a time capsule of Hollywood movie-making from that era, and apparently it did pretty well at the box office when it came out. Anyway, it now has a place in my chronologically arranged blu-ray collection, along with other movies from 1960, including Spartacus, The Time Machine, Inherit the Wind, Psycho, The Magnificent Seven, etc.
