What's the rule of thumb for viewing distance vs how big the screen should be? I sit about 9-10' away from my 25" tv in a 12'x13' room and it's a bit too small. I try to judge from floor displays at electronic stores but due to the size of the showroom it's just not the same.

The 'formula' is, for a high-definition signal, you should view from a distance of 3.3 times the picture height. For interlaced NTSC, it's 8 times the picture height, but since all the HD sets perform line-doubling (at least), a better figure to use is 5 times the picture height.

Based on this, a widescreen set around 51" diagonal would be in order for your viewing distance.

I sit 8' from my 42". With that viewing calculator I would pay most attention to the last section, visual acuity. There's no way I would sit so close to my TV based on the viewing angle numbers.

I am going for a 40" and I will be sitting 14' feet away. You should be OK with a 32", but I would just go the distance for the 36".
