Im going to be custom building a computer, and want to know what a good video card is, to run an rca from my computer to my tv. Do i need one with a TV OUT? If not, whats a good video card, what kind of connection does it have? Also, try to keep the price low without sacrificing too much quality.
Also, while were at it, what kind of sound card is good to go into a receiver? Hows the SB Live 5.1 ?? Thanks.. Also, remember try to keep the price low.

We need more info..

If you are using a large RPTV (Analog) and you plan on going

from the PC to the TV forget about it.. Not worth doing IMHO.

If you have an HDTV set with DVI in, then I would highly

recommend a GeForce 3 Ti200 with DVI out or a similar Radeon

from ATI (if they offer DVI which I am sure they do)

Or if you have an FPTV you can use the VGA out on a standard

video card to go into the projector via an VGA to RGB cable

I believe. I am not positive on the FPTV issues so somene

better versed in that area could help you more.

most video cards with video out have svideo out connectors, not composite, so you would want the tv to have svideo in, or you can buy an svideo to composite connector at radioshack...

i believe the ati cards supposedly have the best video out

David,
Care to elaborate why? I have a SB Live! 5.1 and I think
it's a great card.. I want to upgrade to an Extigy that's
how good I think the card is.. (I want MORE) :)
Pat,
Okay with a 19" CRT you can use TV Out no problemo.. On a
RPTV I would say fuhgetaboutit unless you have an HDTV.
To connect a card like the GeForce 3 Ti200 with TVOut you
simply need a TV with S-Video In and you need a S-Video cable
to go from the PC to the TV. If this is a newer TV it should
have an S-Video in, however if it is an older set without
that input you would need a converter to go from S-Vid to
Composite.

Ok, lets say the tv just has rca in's. Thats composite? I thought composite was the cable that looked like a mini XLR...that must be S Video. Ok.. so, whats a good cheap card that has composite outs??? Do all video cards have composite outs?

Pat,

composite = RCA conenctor. S-Video is a little round 9-pin mini-DIN connector. All video cards that I have seen with TV-out either have both composite and S-video outputs, or have S-video and include a small s-vid-->composite converter. A good inexpensive card would be any of the ATI Radeon cards (other than the VE). On the low end, the Radeon LE w/tv-out is

TigerDirect.com has GeForce 2 MX w/ TV-out (Svideo) for $29.95 ($49.95 with $20 mail in rebate). Is that cheap enough ? ATI 7500 AIW can be had for probably about $120. I have a GeForce 2, and the TV-out does work, it's not very good, but I have not fool around with it, I just hooked it up for a "proof of concept".
