I just got a Philips DVDR72 that burns DVDR+.
It has a few ways it can take a video input,
the old rca jack, SVideo (SVHS) or component.
I want to burn some old home videos that are on VHS.
The tracking is already starting to fade!
Will it help if I get a VCR with svideo (SVHS) and
connect it to the DVDR?
The old tapes were NOT recorded in SVHS, I was just
hoping the svideo would provide a better picture to burn.

If SVideo will help, is there a good SVCR player
around $100?

Thanks for any help!

Mitsubishi used to make pretty good SVHS decks—don’t know how good the new ones are, but they can probably be found for ~$200.

There's nothing special about an SVHS player that will improve your transfer from VHS tapes. The VHS signal is stored in composite format and has to be separated into component format before being burned to DVD. No SVHS player will do that for you. It will begin the process by generating an S-video output, but then the DVD recorder will have to complete it for recording to DVD.

Now, it may be that one of the current SVHS models will do a better job extracting the composite image from your old tapes than the VCR you have. But that would just mean it's a better VCR.

For your purposes, a review isn't useful unless it separately evaluates the machine's VHS playback. Not all reviewers of SVHS players do that.
