I have a friend who offered to loan me a VCD of footage taped at one of my daughter's recitals. Will this play in my DVD player or do I need some other device to be able to play this? Forgive me of my lack of knowledge on the subject but I never heard of this before.

Most DVD players will play VCD's. Check at http://www.vcdhelp.com They have a listing of player models and what each will play. If your player is not listed, it couldn't hurt to just try playing it.

Another alternative to play the VCD is by using your own computer's CD drive, which can recognise the disc format much more better.
Most of the official VCD releases are in .DAT format, which will be indentified by most computer's CD drive.

Just look on the front panel of you DVD player. It would have a logo that says Video CD. If it does then it will play.
