It took nearly a year but Variety has an article about the petition against the altering of Asian films.

This is very good timing. More and more titles are getting re-released as Region 3 only.
Of course I am sure that nothing will change and the powers that be at Miramax will claim that they single handedly brought Asian movies to America and that we should be happy to see them at all.

it's something. At the very least mainstream Hollywood will pick up the scent, and it may serve as a catalyst for high-profile directors to help fight this

Reacting to the Alliance's mission, Woody Tsung, chief executive of the Hong Kong Motion Picture Industry Association, says, "Like anywhere, Hong Kong directors naturally prefer that their version remains intact but for those with commercial ambitions, they realize that the U.S. distributor often knows the market best."
Translation: "Disney's paying us MAD bank and financing new films to butcher. We don't dare kill the cow"
