My friend has had a pair of these for at least 20 years. I don't care for their sound, but they will easily play louder than any consumer speaker I've ever heard. Closest thing to concert levels in your house.

He never had them matched to any decent source components, so maybe that's why I don't care for them. Did I say they will play loud? Very loud...

    James,

With 95+ Db of efficiency yes they will certainly go LOUD
even with flea power... But the design of any compression
horn makes them "in your face" some people do not care for
that sound no matter how good the sources are. I could
listen to them but I doubt I would pick them as speakers I
could live with for life.. I would rather go with a set of
folded horns running a good wideband driver but Line Arrays
and Electrostats are my cup of tea [IMG]

Boy, this brings back memories. I owned a pair -- same design (horn loaded woofer) but a slightly smaller enclosure -- back in the '80s and used them for my home system. Very efficient with a clean sound. It made for a good conversation piece, too!

Holy crap. I can't believe that huge horn loaded system is only 97db efficient. [IMG]

I would love to have 5 of them in a HT. I still love the sound of the VOTs.

I did a presentation on the history and improvement loudspeakers
about two years ago for an engineering class and the Voice of
the Theater series from Altec was a big part of it.

Too bad I've had to format my hard drive so many times, otherwise
    I'd still have it. [IMG]

They look like RPTVs or something.

Pretty intimidating speakers, I wonder what 5.1 would sound like. Imagine DTS at above reference!

I'd be shaking in my seat.

    Chris:

I remember a friend's system that consisted of a Dynaco Pre-amp, Heathkit 200 watt per channel amp and Dual 1249 turntable plugged into a pair of these puppies. When we hit 10 watts RMS per channel into them we had a guy come down from his house, that was inside watching TV, that wanted to know where the live band was.

Since that day I have always wanted just a pair of them and they have always been priced out of my reach. Back in the 70s they could be had for $500 each. You could also buy the drivers by themselves and get the design for building the cabinet. Talk about a mother to put together.

    Brett:

Yes, it could be loud. But multichannel SACD would sound SO good that you could swear that the artist was standing in your living room with you.

And don't even get me started on what a movie would sound like. That is what they were made for in the first place and I listened to many of them in theaters for years.

BTW, I prefer the layout with the horn on top of the box not inclosed in it. There is something about seeing that 23 inch horn just sitting on top of that huge reflex.
