    Microsoft to cut TV jobs?

Microsoft plans to restructure its troubled television business in a move that will entail the cutting of about 168 jobs, according to a report Tuesday.

Microsoft's television unit, based in Mountain View, Calif., has been struggling as its WebTV and premium service, UltimateTV, were slow to gain subscribers.

The restructuring will eliminate the UltimateTV division in California's Silicon Valley, a business of about 500 employees, according to the San Jose Mercury News, citing sources close to the company. About two-thirds of the workers will be reassigned to new positions with the software giant, and 168 employees will be given three months to find other jobs within Microsoft or get laid off, the newspaper said in its online edition.

Microsoft could not be immediately reached for comment.

Among other changes, the UltimateTV hardware group will be moved into Microsoft's Xbox team, the newspaper said. Xbox is the Redmond, Wash.-based company's new game console, the focus of intense marketing efforts in the hotly contested gaming industry and possibly the launching pad for a general home computing device.

UltimateTV combines television-based e-mail and Web-surfing services with DirecTV satellite-television programming and digital video recording. The service, which launched less than a year ago, will still be available after the restructuring, according to the report

I wonder how long before the X-Box supports PVR? Seems like a logical step to take... at least to me.
