Does it make sense to use an s-video cable between the dvd player output and the A/V receiver video input, but a yellow composite video cable between the A/V receiver output and the TV? The old TV only has a composite input, and I don't think there will be a new TV purchase anytime soon.

Would it result in any improvement, or would it be a waste of $20?

As long as it is not a cheap cable, you will probably see no benefits and the s-video may even look worse because the reciever has to convert it.

Hi Mark. Welcome to HTF! :)
No it wont work. You will not even see any picture.
Most receivers will NOT convert the SVideo input to be seen on the Composite output.
Nice try though.
