I've got a chance to get a Harmon Kardon AVR7000 amp for really cheap.

One of the ways I use my setup is to watch movies from my PC using a digital opitical out.
some of the avi files i watch have 5.1 encoded into the sound track
willl this older amplifier be able to receive the optical stream and separate it into the 5.1 channels?

the amp has DTS decoder, Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic decoders built into it

thanks in advance

As long as the input device sends the DD5.1 or DTS audio stream, or can send raw PCM (I think), it should work fine.

Another way to look at it: just as a DVD and blu-ray player will work with this older AVR, so should media streamer so long as the media is properly encoded and the device sends the right data to the AVR.

so if that's the case and the channels arent coming through properly then the issue can perhaps be rectified with the output on the PC.

cheers!
