No 4k review copies

The 4K isn’t coming out until February whereas the BD is December; the 4K likely hasn’t been authored or pressed yet. Should serve as an indication for how few 4K replication lines there are and how quickly they fill up.

Which is the universal problem.

Too much crap being authored to 4k.

There is something of a misalignment between “titles that benefit from 4K physical media releases” and “titles that physical enthusiasts want to purchase in 4K”
One can begin with anything shot in 16mm.

Oh no. That's too limiting.

There's a lot of crap just being released - period!

And, at the expense of so much good stuff remaining either back-ordered or not even slated for a hi-def release of any kind.

Hollywood never seems to learn. And it's too easy to simply suggest 'the crap' sells better than the art.

So, I'm not sure why this mastering merry-go-round continues.

No, it isn't. They want to make money and Fast And The Furious Part 19 is going to make more money than almost any (if not every) catalog title from the 1950's so they're going to choose to release the CG car chase movie over a better movie.

Ah - with a categorical statement like that being thrown down - like a gauntlet - my scientific mind immediately thinks: Could Robert Harris be speaking the truth? And would it be possible to find data on the World Wide Web, which would support this statement?

Not so easy to ascertain! It is very difficult to perform a simple search and find "Total number of 4K UHD released in USA in 2024". You'll get dozens of websites' release calendars, but no hard and fast sorted data.

So to just get an idea, if one were to look at one website, which does attempt to give a total number of blu-ray and 4K UHD released in the US in 2024 (let's not quibble about errors here):

US released Blu-rays and 4K UHDs in 2024: 486

ref: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?year=2024

But how many 4K UHDs, please, Microsoft Copilot?

In 2024, there were approximately 200 4K Ultra HD titles released in the USA

ref: https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/the-4k-uhd-release-list/4k-uhd-list-01

Now this could quite possibly be a fairly accurate proportion, according to Circana Videoscan:

uhdbd-unit-share.png

And, indeed, it looks as though the share of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the overall disc market is growing, mainly at the expense of Blu-ray Disc, and not so much at the expense of DVD.

But to find out if the reason that Conclave is receiving a 4K UHD release, because "too much crap is being authored to 4K":

Copilot argues: "The staggered release dates for "Conclave" are likely due to strategic marketing and production timelines. Releasing the Blu-ray first allows fans to enjoy the movie in high definition sooner, while the 4K UHD version, which includes additional features and enhanced quality, is scheduled for a later date to build anticipation and provide an incentive for fans to purchase both versions. It's also possible that the extra time allows for the inclusion of exclusive bonus content, such as behind-the-scenes footage and director commentary, which can take longer to produce and finalize".

AHA! Getting fans to buy BOTH versions - have we seen this before, or what? Universal has done this loads of times before!

But HEY, Copilot - please focus on the question! "Is this staggered release due to too much crap being authored to 4K?"

AI replies serenely: "The landscape of 4K UHD content is indeed vast, and not every title may meet the highest quality standards some enthusiasts expect. However, the increased accessibility of 4K technology means more movies, including a mix of blockbusters and less critically acclaimed titles, are getting the 4K treatment.

The sheer volume can sometimes feel overwhelming, but it also provides more options for different tastes and preferences. It’s a double-edged sword: more choice, but also more variability in quality."

So there you have it. Hooray for different tastes and preferences! (And just be eternally grateful that it is even getting a 4K UHD release, announced at the same time as the blu-ray - and not six months later!)

Viewed Conclave (stream) on my OLED.

The richest, most beautiful deep scarlet reds this side of dye transfer and Man for all Seasons.

And a quality film, with great performances to boot.

Rather than curtail the titles being released in 4K, maybe someone should see that production capacity is increased. Then we’d get more movies we like, and more crap, in 4K. Win/win
