I do not understand why Universal is offering two BD versions -- a 50th Anniversary Edition and a Restored Edition. Looking at the differences, it looks like just a couple of extras are different and the restored version has English DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 versus English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 for the 50th anniversary version.

No, for some reason they are listing ALL the versions they have released. The 50th anniversary was 5 years ago and is totally unrelated to this new restored release.

Don't know why they included all that confusing alternat release info.

The big announcement of course being that Universal Studios Home Entertainment still exists.

In addition to this remaster and the ones for The Breakfast Club and Apollo 13, they've been releasing 2-3 new-to-BD catalog titles on average every month. They just haven't always been the pre-70s titles that this forum goes for.

Their catalog releases in 2015:

1/6

Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

The Constant Gardener (2005)

The Good Shepherd (2006)

2/3

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993)

Kull the Conqueror (1997)

2/17

The Andromeda Strain (1971)

Munich (2005)

Sneakers (1992)

3/3

Curious George (2006)

Mobsters (1991)

4/7

Imitation of Life (1934)

Imitation of Life (1959)

Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (1969)

Silent Running (1972)

5/5

The Beguiled (1971)

Coogan's Bluff (1968)

The Eiger Sanction (1975)

Play Misty for Me (1971)

5/12

Orgazmo (1997)

Wet Hot American Summer (2001)

8/11

Dead Silence (2007)

Hellfighters (1968)

9/8

The Life of David Gale (2003)

The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)

They've also licensed out some to 3rd party labels:

1/20

The Palm Beach Story (1942) (Criterion)

3/17

Ride the Pink Horse (1947) (Criterion)

4/14

Sullivan's Travels (1941) (Criterion)

5/19

Make Way for Tomorrow (1937) (Criterion)

I'm assuming this is just a teaser for the far more elaborate Criterion edition correct?

The Criterion laserdisc, and later, the DVD of Spartacus include two of the finest running audio commentaries that I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It would be a shame if the new restoration wasn't licensed to them so that these, and other extras could be included.

Thanks, David. That release information certainly confused me!

Very nice, I hope they remaster Brian De Palmas Scarface, Jurassic Park 2D, The Lost World, The Big Lebowski, The Frighteners, Scorseses Cape Fear, The Mummy and The Mummy Returns.
