Why doesn't all HT equipment connect together using USB connectors, each piece could have an in and out and all pieces are simply dasiy-chained together

    Would this work?

    Is this the way forward??

    Nice thought.

USB is still fairly 'new' and there are millions of analog components out there that this new system would not be compatible with.

And actually, USB is overkill for home systems. Something like Cat5 networking cable should be used so you can run it to each speaker. Then each speaker would have a network card, D/A converter and a mono-block amp.

Meridian actually has a system like this, but it's in the $15,000 range.

USB does not natively offer any copy protection that is typically is being presented with either iLink or DVI connectivity solutions. What exactly would you like to carry across USB?

    i love usb.

imagine plugging it your dvd player, the receiver detects it (and possibly auto-configurs itself) and you're done!

still....i'm waiting for blue-tooth! no wires in a ht world - just imagine!

I'm just thinking one single connection across the board does it all, surely you can't get any better than that!

That is the whole idea behind the 'i' models in the Elite line. It not only provides for management communication, but also the multi-channel data streams, too. One-cable solution for connecting the 47Ai player to the 49TXi integrated receiver.

Not advocating, just using it as a prime example.
