Hello all,

If I have my PS3 set to double scale and my Sony STR-DA5200ES set to upscale to suit my 1081i tv, is one cancelling out the other? Should I have only 1 component of the 2 set to upscale? Or is this OK?

Thanks for the help

The next device should autoselect the proper resolution to match what comes in and not do unnecessarily scaling. If it works, then it's doing everything right.

For example if the PS3 double scales from 480i to 480p, someone has to go the rest of the way from 480p to 1080i. Practically all TV's will do that for you and an intermediate device is not mandatory to do it.

Some 1080i TV's (CRT models) run in 960i (with no explicit scaling) when given a 480p signal but "change gears" to 1080i when given a 1080i signal.

Some 1080i TV's have a manual 540p/1080i switch that optically changes 960i (if present) to 480p but also changes 1080i to 540p. You may or may not feel it makes the picture better but 540p should not be used with HD shows.

The PS3 doubles to 960p in double mode (windowboxed in a 1080p frame). Right now, your receiver isn't doing anything. If you want to use the receiver scaler, you need to make the PS3 output at 480p (just turn off upscaling) and let the receiver handle it.
