I have a 34" widescreen CRT HDTV (RCA D34w20) with 910 lines, one DVI-D (HDCP) input and two HD component inputs. I have heard that upscaling does not have much effect on CRT HDTVs. I'd like to know if a DVD player with Faroudja FIL23xx chipset and DVI output can truly output 720p or 1080i (even 1080p possible?) to my HDTV monitor via the DVI connection? Thanks.

If you are considering something like the Samsung or Bravo, they can output 1080i via DVI to your set. They will not output 1080p and even if they could, no sets of which I’m aware have the electronics to properly display 1080p (I’m cautious in this assessment, as the technology exists).

There are some reports that indicate very positive results with the 1080i up-conversion in the DVD player and some where reports don’t see much, if any difference. I expect that those who see a big difference have sets that don’t do as good an internal up-conversion as those who have sets with very good internal up-conversion.

I thought that the internal line doubler inside the TV sets can only convert 480i to 480p. Can TV sets up-scale all the way to 720p or 1080i?

Some sets can upscale to 1080i or 720P. My 53" Sony CRT RPTV scales all 480i sources to either 480P or 960i. Scaling to 1080i with my LiteOn LVD-2001 (using component) is a big improvement over a standard progressive DVD player. I suspect that 1080i DVI would be an even bigger improvement.

But I agree with Gregg, on a 34" set, just go with 480P using a good DVD player and enjoy. Any improvement you might see going to 1080i is not likely to justify the expense.
