No, Joseph, I can't say that I noticed any difference in sound between the two. The THX really doesn't do all that much (if anything) in my opinion. (Everything "sounds" more "balanced" is how I would put it: the bass doesn't
overtake the sound, etc.) I was quite happy with the 696 and I might go back to it. (I wanted to be somewhat future-proof by adding the extra channel. Not really sure more DVDs will be using it in the future, so who knows? Right now the I'm experimenting with a rear center channel to see how much I like it or will use it.) Anyway, the 696 is worth the extra cash over the 595 (backlit remote, more watts per channel, better Dacs, upsampling, etc.), but I'm not so sure the 797 is worth the extra cash over the 696. Good luck with whichever you choose. Both sound great to my ears.
