I sometimes hear that people are upgrading their reciever. I was under the impression that if you wanted to upgrade your receiver you would need to buy a new one. I have a Yamaha 4860, and I am curious if there is anything I can do to upgrade it, as I know it doesn't have dolby digital II (i think thats what it is called), thanks.

Unless your receiver allows you to use an RS232 connection and the manufacturer offers the upgrade, No you won't be upgrading your receiver. Generaly the only "upgrades" to receivers are offered at receivers costing $2k+(more like $4k+)

It ts not necessarilly true that upgrades are available only for the highest-end receivers.
I own a $1k Harman/Kardon AVR 430 receiver and I have just installed an upgrade via the RS232 port a few days ago.
Even if this is quite an important upgrade, Harman/Kardon is giving it away for free - great customer support policy !!!
