Upgradeable Receivers

    I am not sure how this works... I assume you can only do this with big buck receivers and not my Pioneer VSX-D811S.

    What price range receivers do they start at? How far can you upgrade them? What can you upgrade?

    the only *receiver* i know of is the onkyo nr1000 -- you can pull out the "cards" from the back as needed. total upgrade-ability.

    i know there are several high-end pre/pro's also have this type of feature.

    While a nice feature, it should not be a deciding factor for a purchase, IMO. The cycle of the models happens roughly once a year, and after about one cycle (your receiver becomes 2 models old), you will almost never see updates for that particular model released because they are working on the newer models, not upgrades for the older ones. For the higher $$ models that span a few years, it can be very useful though, but often you still have to send the whole thing in for certain updates.

    I agree... Thats why I'll never spend above 500 bucks on a receiver.
