Oh yeah...The reason modern AVR have room correction (well...half the reason)...The typical home theater is not set up exactly how the soundtrack was mastered. If you used ITU guidelines and sat at the direct epicenter of 5(or 7) speakers...There would be no need for...Phase correctionSpeaker level adjustment Speaker delay

So, the question to as whether or not the tower surrounds need to be the exact same as the fronts, or can I go to a smaller speaker in the same line for the surrounds?

Also, i'm starting to wonder, were the RF82's necessary? I just wonder if perhaps maybe the smaller Klipsch would have been just as good. The RF42, 52, or 62's. Would any of those given me the same sound quality? Remembering that I live in a small apartment, are the 82's basically overkill and not giving me any more performance for the money compared to what I could have gotten from one of the smaller Klipsch speakers? Given that i'm using a subwoofer, are the larger speakers giving me anything that I couldnt have gotten from the smaller speaker + sub.

Reading an ariticle on Polks website, they were talking about the advantages and disadvantages of using larger drivers vs. smaller drivers. Granted, the Klipsch 82's use 2x 8" drivers, but Polk seemed to suggest that you can get the same, or even better performance out of using more smaller drivers (i.e. 3 or 4 5"-6" drivers). Granted, Klipsch only uses 2 drivers in their reference series, so, it may be that the 8" was necessary. I like the sound i'm getting from these speakers, but I just wonder if perhaps I could have gotten smaller ones and ended up with the same sound, and spent less money.

Also, upon completion of YPAO, it assigns all of my speakers to small. Reading some articles, they say that tower speakers should be set to large, but, i'm thinking that only applies when you dont have a sub, correct? Setting to large allows the bass frequencies to be passed to the main speaker, setting to small sends those frequencies to the sub, right? Having said this, it basically reinforces my wondering if a bigger speaker is necessary for mains and surrounds when you are using a sub.

Large/small has nothing to do with size of the speaker.Large is excluded(meaning full range)Small is included.Yamaha, in the RX-A line, uppers models at least, include multiple crossover points. So you can land your fronts at 40hz.Your 871, if you lowered the crossover to 40...the sub, in turn, only does 20-40.Issue there...is if the center will tolerate that (I bet yes...cause sound effects are probably filtered out in mastering) .

Oh yeah.If you play a lossless movie and use "direct"..the bass management is bypassed. So, connect the tower rears, find a movie with tons of surround going on...
