Unshielded speakers and placement near CRT TV and computer (1 Viewer)

If it matters, the speakers are Onix Reference 1's. How far away should they be from the TV and computer? I don't want to damage the TV or corrupt any data. Also can the speakers do any harm when those two things are not in use?

The problem with unshielded speakers is the big honking magnets on the back of the drivers. They distort the images on a CRT monitor because they can bend the elctron beam(s) that strikes the inside of the tube and excites the phosphors. And you know how well magnetic media get along with magnets.

The speakers probably aren't going to damage the TV, but if they're too close they're going to screw up the image. The only way to determine proper placement is trial and error. When the image is distorted, you're too close. Normal and you're OK.

I wouldn't put unshielded speakers anywhere near a computer. It is possible for the magnets to cause data loss or even damage to components regardless of what is or isn't turned on - and there's no easy rule of thumb to tell you what is a safe distance. IMHO, not worth the risk. If you have the right room layout, use Reference 1s as surround speakers and get a good pair of shielded speakers to live near your TV and other electronics.
