I first heard of them about a year ago when my parents picked up some music for me on their trip to Scandanavia. They were on Absolute Music 41 (their version of the NOW! series.) I LOVED THEM! They kinda reminded me of Matchbox 20. Great sound (who cares that I can't understand what they are singing about!) I tracked down some other stuff by them and it's just as good. Recommended!

So I'll take this as another opportunity to pimp my favorite rock/pop music of the past 20 years:

If you haven't been listening to Marillion, you're doing yourself a grave disservice. Endlessly brilliant, ultimately accessible, fascintatingly clever, executed with passion and skill.

Anoraknophobia and Marillion.com are freakin' masterpieces. Their new one, Marbles, will be out very soon.

Hey Mike, I received a Marillion sample cd in the mail after I signed up for on their web-site. I found out about it via HTF, did you post that link? Anyway, it's a good CD. I really like most of the songs on it.

Chris, Sirius Satellite Radio has been playing Nada Surf's "Inside of Love" on their Left of Center channel and I absolutely love it. I really need to go out and buy that CD.

Jeffrey, glad you liked it. Make copies for friends.

I may have posted that link, but I know I'm not the only Marillion fan 'round here.

Daniel Lanois - Shine
Even a year after its release, it's part of my daily tunefest.
George Michael - Patience
Very sophisticated sound, reference-quality Pop music. But beware of the overtly gay lyrics and frequent F-bombs. My wife just looks at me in horror at some of the lyrics, but she loves to dance to it.
This refers to the European version. The American release isn't out yet, and may be different or censored.

Paul Simon - Me and Julio Down By the SchoolyardOne of the most triumphant songs in my current circulation. First got hooked on it from the Royal TenenbaumsCat Stevens - Moonshadow, The First Cut is the Deepest, The WindAny of his songs rise above the crowd, but these three are, IMO, the most definitive. In particular, his First Cut... shows just how shallow Sheryll Crow's version really isEels - Mr. E's Beautiful BluesGot interested in the band through this thread. Fell in love with the song, just a really great sound to itRyan Adams - Firecracker (live acoustic)While the album version of this song is nothing spectacular, his live acoustic performances of tihs song really connect. Sort of contemplative, much as Ryan Adams's stuff is. I recommend the version from his San Francisco 2/18/01 show, availiable at archive.org. Also Memphis from his Seatle show (earliest show on archive.org)Damien Rice - CannonballJust wanted to second this piercing highlight of the recent folk revivalJack Johnson - Plastic Jesus > Fall LineLight, firmhanded take on "Plastic Jesus" from the previously linked Jack Johnson show. Actual SHN file hereJust wanted to second this piercing highlight of the recent folk revivalBuddy Mondlock and Johnathan Edwards - Magnolia StreetAn iTunes discovery. A funny little ditty about love and such. Been playing pretty heavyFive For Fighting - NYC Weather ReportAfter the great pop album "American Town," F4F's new album is with the exception of two tracks far too soft and squishy for my tastes. The first exception is "100 Years" which has already been mentioned and to which I can only second. The other is NYC Weather Report, which feels like it could fit on the previous album. And that's a good thing. Just a smooth, well-crafted pop songToby Keith and Willy Nelson - Beer for my HorsesNot a huge country fan, but this song is so engaging confident, unpretentious, and funUncle Kracker - Drift Away, Memphis Soul Song, Follow Me, In a Little While, When the Sun Goes DownThe man does catchy radio pop well. His cover of "Drift Away" is one of the few I like better than the originalRyan Adams - Monday NightSeperate from my live recommendations, his album version of "Monday Night" is something that I can't label. It's different than anything playing on the radio right now, and it's better than most of it tooGreen Day - I Fought the LawAnother cover I like better than the original. A bubblegum song with a hint of edgeSeconding Blink-182 - I Miss You

INDIGENOUS
Members of the Nakota Sioux Nation, the musicians of Indigenous grew up on the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota and still reside in the area. As adolescents, their primary influence was Greg Zephier father of Mato, Pte, and Wanbdi, and a Native American rights activist who played music throughout the Sixties and Seventies.

"Just imagine the ghost of Stevie Ray Vaughan sitting in with The White Stripes and go from there.
Indigenous have often cited the musical influence of such artists as Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, and Led Zeppelin. But Mato adds some additional names to the list: “I think people would be surprised that we listen to Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave—a lot of different influences that you may not hear right away in our songs.”

Well, dammit, let me do the same...
Hoven Droven has been a favourite for about 6-7 years now and will continue to be. Love, love, love this band. Electrified Swedish folk that will shake your little booty (along with some gorgeous slower tunes). Three North American released albums (all 3 links have sound samples):
Groove (in particular the tune "Slentbjenn")
More Happy Moments
Hippa
If you see them live, you'll also see the absolute love they have for their music.

Ok, here goes:

Tori Amos - Under the Pink & B-Sides. This album, personally, means more then almost any other album I own.. and there are some moments on this album that I think are near to perfect for what I want to listen to.

Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water. This album, from start to finish, has numbers that I think are better executed then almost anything else. When I die, I want this song played at my funeral. (along with Tori's Happy Phantom). "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright" and "Only Living Boy in New York" whew.

Paul Simon - Songs of the Capeman - I chose this album not because it's his best work, although the album is very good.. but I chose it because it's often overlooked. This album is edgy, interesting, and has some great story telling to it.

Deep Forest - Comparosa - a beautiful album, mixed with almost everything I enjoy about more eclectic music. A unique, multilayered track system, and it has a feeling of joy about the whole thing.

Enya - A Day Without Rain - I almost chose Shepherd Moons, but I do love A Day Without Rain.

And a few truly unknowns that people should take the time to find:

Mouth Music - Mouth Music. The original album by a band that works to preserve truly Gaelic music. Beautiful and rythmic, this album updates with modern beats in the background (but traditional pacing) traditional Irish music.

Avenue Q - Original Broadway Soundtrack - If you haven't taken the time to listen to some off beat broadway, you might try "Avenue Q" sort of an adult Sesame Street, with some great numbers like "The Internet is for Porn" "Everyone's a little bit Racist" "I Wish I could Go Back to College" This album has enough insight and laughs to remind a lot of us of the transition between "college life" and "the real world"

Bruce McCollough - Shame Based Man - the boy from "Kids in the Hall" steps out with his own album. It has it's ups and downs, but at it's high points, it's very good, and worth a listen if you were a fan of the show. Songs like "Vigil" and "That's America"

Soundtrack to "Twin Peaks The Series" phenomenal. Julie Cruise gets to me on this album.

Jeffrey, I would highly recommend it. Inside of Love is a great song, but their are so many others on this album that are on par if not better. You will not regret.

I love this type of threads. It is often very helpful to discover good stuff, though it has its risks as well. I discovered Tool by a thread like this, and got 3 of their albums except Opiate and I love all of them. Seeing praises for APC by other Tool fans I recently bought 13th step, and saw that it is not my cup of tea... Unfortunate, cause I had big expectations...

Not exactly a favourite but I'd recommend Bloody 6 for 80s metal fans. They are a group which made 1 album and disappeared. I have the album on a worn out tape, couldn't find the CD anywhere, let me know if you can...

Dead Milkmen - BEELZEBUBBA, and

Had to post this recommendation, as it is one of the best sounding groups I have heard for a LONG time. Absolutely beautiful music!!
Throw - Border Crossing
I found them while just browsin on iTunes. Check'em out!!
Also, iTunes has a free downloadable song by a group called Cities of Foam that I really like. I actually bought their entire album. They're an electronic group, little to no words, but very easy to chill to.
