Let's see, Best Picture, Best Direction, Art Direction, Costume Design, etc etc etc
And all we get is a lousy PAN & SCAN version????????????
This film needs to be re-done correctly NOW.
Please, oh please? :)

YES!
I've definately been holding off of buying this great film because of the lousy DVD. I have 3 coworkers who are in the same boat, either themselves or per family members.

I have also been holding out on buying The Sting because of the pan/scan. Universal, please release a widescreen special edition with both a dts and DD soundtrack.

This gets posted every few months (and why not, it's one of the biggest travesties in DVD), but Universal doesn't seem to be listening or give a damn. Sigh...

Keep in mind that many of the Universal Classic films were licensed to Columbia Tristar for overseas DVD release early in the beginning throngs of the DVD business.
That is why a lot of the Universal titles have not been remastered or released (BTTF) due to this agreement.
However, this agreement ends at the end of 2001 - so I would assume that you will see an onslaught of Universal Classics next year. They didn't want to create Special Editions and have Columbia reap in the profits overseas.
That is why I believe you are seeing reissues by GoodTimes of some Universal Classics (Airport, Earthquake, ...).
I believe these licenses also expire at the end of the year and that is why GoodTimes is trying to get out most of the big name titles before this occurs.

Oh Universal has been on my list for awhile now with that travesty of a DVD from awhile back.
Larry, I hope youre right. I heard about the legalities with Columbia in the BTTF interview a few months ago.

And I'll mention once again that this is available on VHS TAPE in widescreen, but never has been on laserdisc or DVD!

Universal, look what Fox did with the "other" Newman/Redford classic, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. Emulate that disc. The Sting deserves the same treatment.

Universal needs to re-release the awful Image discs as well. I'd buy a Marx Bros. box set in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the existing DVD's being so low in quality.

Two more people here (one being me) that have not bought The Sting for the same reasons mentioned.
Myself and my friend are ready to plunk down the change any time you studio dudes are ready to release it properly.

This is one of the 2 P&S only discs I own, bought before I knew anything. I could always use an extra drink coaster...
