I'm guesing this is the way forward for further Univesal complete series dvd sets. I wouldn't be surprised if releases/re-releases with these giant 24-discs cases are done for stuff like:

- House MD
- Monk
- The Office
- Murder She Wrote
- Emergency!
- Parks and Recreation
- Warehouse 13
- Parenthood
- Northern Exposure

- Las Vegas
- 30 Rock
- Eureka

Do you think that such could be done for Knight Rider and Miami Vice?

Probably only when Universal's agreement with Mill Creek expires.

If such an agreement is not renewed, then most likely we'll see further sets using these giant 24-disc digipak cases, such as:

- Knight Rider
- Miami Vice
- Friday Night Lights
- Rockford Files
- AIrwolf
- Sliders
- Quantum Leap
- Coach

Bumping this up: the Amazon entry I pointed out that shows the proof of how this Magnum all-in-one is packaged has a review that is somewhat critical of that packaging style, and that reviewer seems to say that if you want better packaging and more ease of manipulation for binging, then get the 2013 version of this release.

Here is that review:

To each his own. I rather like those Megapak cases, although I'm not that fond of the ones which do overlapping discs on a page but that affects "standard" cases too.

If you're going to binge a series these cases make it quite easy with several seasons in the case. I tend to watch a season and then watch something else before moving to the next season. Those cases make that type viewing a bit more difficult and I find myself watching however many seasons are in the case before switching shows, but a simply piece of paper in the case can tell you where you left off. The big plus for Megapak cases is they're far more shelf friendly and compact than several individual season cases, especially for those shows which were originally in digipak cases.

That said, it's difficult to see in those photos just what the gripe is. From the description it sounds like it's multiple discs in a stack along with stacks overlapping. If that's the case, then I have to agree with that review. Stacked discs are horrible no matter what type of package they're in but put in overlapping stacks in a Megapak is just plain poor packaging.

So basically, you're saying that you don't care for the way my copy of that Streets all-in-one was packaged?

If it's stacks of discs on a single spindle or stacks of discs on a single spindle that overlap other stacks of discs on a single spindle, no. I do not. I have a few of those Sony all-in-one sets that are compartments of stacked discs. They're horrible and a royal pain to deal with if you're taking any disc but the top one out. If I'm binging one of those series I do a rotation method by putting the last disc watched on the bottom of the stack leaving the one up next/currently watching on the top.

I just assumed that one would be the regular Megapak with pages of discs, possibly overlapping, like they've used for every CBS series I own in that packaging.

I hate to admit it, but that is indeed how that Streets release was for me when I got it from the Wal-Mart in Simpsonville, and is how it is with my copy of that Untouchables all-in-one that I got from that same place.

Here is that Untouchables release as I have it:

Oh... wow! I have an unopened copy of The Untouchables! I'm now dreading opening it!

Am I seeing that right? It looks like the discs alternate all the way down!

You are indeed correctly seeing it; that is, as I said, likewise to how it was on my copy of that Streets release.

^That's just horrible packaging! I couldn't stand it so I opened my copy of The Untouchables. They must have used 2 different packaging styles. Mine is in 2 cases: 1 Megapak containing S1-3 with overlapping discs on pages and a wide, standard, keepcase for S4 with non-overlapping discs on pages:

^That looks like my first Fugitive set. I picked it up early, before they fixed the music issues, and got it replaced with a "Most Wanted" edition via a recall/replacement program:

For some reason they were replacing the entire set rather than just the incorrect discs and didn't want the compact version back so I now have 2 sets. The newer compact edition with some audio issues and the "Most Wanted" that has corrected discs (and I had to call in to get those once that set arrived!).

So, basically, you have a proper Fugitive and an adulterated Fugitive? That's just how I'm reading you.

Yes. A "Most Wanted" edition with corrected music discs I got as replacement for the bad music version discs in the newer, compact, "Complete" series set which I still have. I really like having the "Most Wanted" set with corrected discs but would have been just as happy to have simply received discs with the corrected music cues for the compact "Complete" series set.

To bring this back to topic: discovered from EBay that Universal's redone all-in-one release of Psych (2006-2014 USA detective series w/James Roday and Dule Hill) is packaged the same way as the Magnum one that I talked about earlier (except that Psych is in one case for its eight seasons' worth, just like The Streets of San Francisco had one case for its five seasons' worth).
