I just happened to look in my WINNT folder on my Win2000 laptop and there are about 30 folders with names like...

    $NtUninstallKB810217$

and such in that directory. They total about 60mb or so...no really big deal, other than I'm in a storage crunch and I delete everything that I can.

    Are these folders needed?

They are the files needed to uninstall windows updates and service packs. You don;t need them unless you want to uninstall them. If you want to keep them just in case, you can burn them to a CD, otherwise delete them if you want.
