who is your favorite underrated actor? or what is your favorite underrated character role in a movie? the one that springs to mind for me this moment is Jeff Daniels' portrayal of Joshua Chamberlain in Turner Brodcastings movie "Gettysburg". hardly an auspiscious beginning to this thread i know but if you've seen this film you may know what i mean. rarely, read never, am i moved by a movie but Daniels infused this role with such quiet humanism and humanity that i found myself filled with feelings that i find difficult to describe. when has this happened to you?

I've always thought Michael Biehn has always been underrated. I thought he was good in The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, and I've seen him in a couple other movies. But he can't seem to get a break.

Well that was scary! As soon as I saw the topic I immediately thought "Michael Biehn!" too [IMG]
A couple of others that spring to mind are Ethan Hawke ('Beyond Sunrise' and 'Training Day' in particular) and David Morse, who has been great in just about everything he's done.
In TV-land, Lance Henriksen's stint on 'Millennium' will never be forgotten by me, whilst Noah Wyle has been consistently brilliant on 'ER' without ever really getting the credit I think he deserves.

My favorite actor, who I call, "The Modern Man with a Thousand Faces", is Gary Oldman. I believe he is very underated.

I'd have to go with William H. Macy aka That Guy Who's In Every Movie Ever Made. He just brings in a comforting presence in that his being there lets you know you're watching a movie, since he's in every one ever made.

Steve Guttenburg in everything. Well, maybe not Police Academy 4, but everyhting else. This man is a misunderstood acting genius. Did you see his performance in Cocoon? How can you not rally the troops behind me?

I also think Gary Oldman is excellent. I honestly think he is probably the most talanted movie actor today, but I have a hard time thinking of him as under rated. He is very highly rated, just not a "star." There is a difference.

William H. Macy is also excellent, but has an Oscar. Like Frances McDormand, I think this pretty much eliminates them from under rated status.

Keanu Reeves in the same post as Gary Oldman and Gabriel Byrne?

Reese Witherspoon is excellent in everything she's in. She was great in Freeway, one of my all-time favorite cult type films. Without her, Election and Legally Blond would have been flat.

i never said "actresses" in the original post because i thought the PC term was "actor" so i'm glad people are including female 'actors'. speaking of which i vote for Jennifer Jason Leigh. she is also one of the most desirable women on screen as far as i'm concerned.

Stanley Tucci is one of my favourite under-rated actors. Check him out in "Big Night" with Tony Shaloub(another favourite), you won't be disappointed.

I find that Clive Owen and Colin Farrell are the most underrated actors out there.

    I agree with Michael Biehn.

Also, I always thought that Kiefer Sutherland was underrated as an actor. Of course, this has now been remedied to some extent by his Golden Globe win for "24"!
