    From the PR:

The Cold War was hot. Spy movies were hotter. And the '60s were reinventing cool. September 22, 1964 marked the debut of the show that combined these elements into one of the most fondly remembered TV series ever: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. With weapons in hand (and tongues in cheek), agents Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) and Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) carry out the bidding of U.N.C.L.E. chief Alexander Waverly (Leo G. Carroll).

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. TV series was originally a huge hit between 1964 and 1968 and is currently enjoying a renaissance and cult following in the UK on Granada Plus. Cool gadgets, suave charmers and sexy ladies, U.N.C.L.E. was very bond-like in its style with Agent Solo akin to Flemming's super-spy.

Like all good double acts, Agents Solo and Kuryakin are chalk and cheese resulting in a fascinating display of the multi-skilled excellence at their disposal. The romantic adventure-hero Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn), one of U.N.C.L.E.'s top agents is dashing and sophisticated with an easygoing manner and a quick smile. More than capable of taking care of himself, he's calm, quick thinking, well trained, ingenious and coldly calculating when the cards are stacked challengingly against him.

Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) is something of an enigma. He is clever, physically adept and a good man to have at one's side in a tight spot. He is a lone wolf, introverted and not at all gregarious. Like a machine that has been fashioned for a specific purpose, nothing seems to exist for him but the task to be performed.

U.N.C.L.E. attracted a host of huge guest stars over the years with these five awesome movies featuring Joan Crawford, Rip Torn, Herbert Lom, Telly Savalas, Terry-Thomas, John Carradine and Leslie Nielson.

    DISC ONE

    THE SPY WITH MY FACE
When plastic surgery transforms a T.H.R.U.S.H. agent into a perfect twin of Napoleon Solo to gain information 'The August Affair', it's double trouble for the men from U.N.C.L.E.

1965, 83 mins, Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1 Full Screen, Sound: Mono

    ONE SPY TOO MANY
Rip Torn is outstanding as Mr. Alexander, a megalomaniac billionaire who breaks each of the Ten Commandments as he carries out his master plan towards world dominance.

1965, 97 mins, Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1 Full Screen, Sound: Mono

    DISC TWO

    THE KARATE KILLERS
U.N.C.L.E. agents Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin travel around the globe in an effort to track down a secret formula that was divided into four parts and left by a dying scientist. Evil T.H.R.U.S.H. agent Randolph (Herbert Lom) also wants the formula, and is aided by his karate-chopping henchmen. Also stars Joan Crawford in one of her last performances as well as Telly Savalas and Terry-Thomas.

1967, 89 mins, Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1 Full Screen, Sound: Mono

    THE HELICOPTER SPIES
Solo and Illya, narrowly escaping death when an African village is all but exterminated by a newly invented Thermal Prism, begin a dangerous quest to gain control of one of the most powerful weapons ever created before it can be used for conquest of the world. John Carradine guest-stars.

1968, 91 mins, Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1 Full Screen, Sound: Mono

    DISC THREE

    HOW TO STEAL THE WORLD
Solo and Illya follow a dangerous trail seeking the answer to a baffling mystery - the disappearance of a key U.N.C.L.E agent and the abduction of six internationally noted specialists. Leslie Nielson guest-stars.

1968, 86 mins, Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1 Full Screen, Sound: Mono

Great news. I wish they'd include all of the "movie" versions, though. TO TRAP A SPY is an expanded version of the pilot, and THE SPY IN THE GREEN HAT was another.

I can't wait to get these. I'm glad they resisted the tempation to matte them for fake widescreen, too.

I still want the TO TRAP A SPY movie, though!

Interestingly, these movie versions have alternate footage and a bit of new dialog here and there in comparisons with the TV versions.

TO TRAP A SPY is an expanded version of the pilot episode. It was shot in color, and the long movie version is in color as well. The shorter TV version is still shown in black and white. This same thing occured with the THE SPY WITH MY FACE, which was an expanded version of another first season episode, in that it was shot in color and shown that way in the movie version, while the shorter TV version airs in black and white.

So, even though the the first season was mostly shot in black and white, at least 2 shows were shot in color and expanded for overseas theatrical release. The second season forward was made entirely in color.

I'd like to get the series in season box sets, and even the 1983 TV movie sequel RETURN OF THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E: THE FIFTEEN YEARS LATER AFFAIR on DVD. This is a great start though! Hopefully a R1 release will follow.
