Since so many people have been getting into Ghost Recon, I thought I'd start a thread about the game itself, strategies, tips, discussion, etc.

In my limited campaign experience (I've completed 12 objectives in my dossier), I try to use both teams for each mission. I place the most necessary personnel in the Alpha team and then use the Bravo team to scout ahead and cover our advances and retreats. At this point, the AI spots enemies better than I can for the most part so I like to use those eyes for my advantage.

I haven't quite got the hang yet of how the stats play out - I've basically weighted my men heavily on their weapons skill (and stealth for some). I guess I should pump more into endurance (maybe?) but that hasn't come into play so much yet. I also use the specialists (unlocked through each mission's special objective) heavily.

One thing I need is a set of tips for unlocking siege and domination modes. I'm currently trying to unlock siege mode (firefight in the Embassy level on elite with a lone sniper) but I'm stuck. I've eliminated one group of enemies by the garage but I haven't been able to clear the bank area. There are so many targets, they simply swarm my position.

On the online front, it looks like, tentatively, Monday nights at 9pm Eastern is shaping up to be GR Live time. I hope to see you all online for GR madness!

Hey, Todd. That Siege mode is tough to unlock. Make sure you are going with Scott Ibrahim, and that you've unlocked his M98 sniper rifle. I take that rifle with the 6 grenades for that mission. I try to take it very slowly, and spot patrols as early as possible. Usually you can see them marching before they see you--if you see them crouch down and start scattering, you'll know you've been spotted. But if they are still upright and marching, that's a perfect time to lob a grenade at them. Nothing better than chucking a grenade, ducking behind some cover, hearing the explosion go off, and then having the "Enemy soldier down" message appear 6 times on your screen!

My advice is to try to take out groups of enemies with your grenades, and then use the mighty M98 to clean up survivors. Save after every firefight, too. It may sound cheap, but it's very difficult to get through that entire mission with just one guy. I save after each fight, and then if I eat it in the next fight, I only have to go back to my last one. Take your time, use your grenades, and be warned that unlike in the mission, the enemy does like to hang out in the alleyways in Firefight. Good luck, and if you need me to post a more detailed walkthrough with exactly how I did it, just let me know!

A question for the other GR players out there...what's your favorite weapon? I'm a big fan of the 7.62 carbine myself, just curious to hear what some of you other guys like to use.

    Hey Dave,
I have not yet unlocked Ibrahim or the M98. I just finished the sixth mission (I think) where you have to destroy the bridge by blowing up the pylons on either end of it.
What I've been doing so far is after I unlock each specialist, I go through the quick mission to unlock his second weapon.
I have to get better at grenade throwing. I always seem to come up too short or overthrow. Thanks for the tips!
Right now I don't have a favorite weapon - I'm still trying them all out. I just got the PKM machine gun and, so far, it's pretty effective - the sight has good range and the accuracy is better than I expected. [IMG] I'll have to experiment with it some more [IMG] The 7.62 carbine is nice as well. I also like the AK-74.

Got a question about XBL & Ghost Recon - if you die in a game, do you stay dead until the end of the current game? Or do you respawn?

You will respawn. The host can also change the number of times you can respawn.

Well, it's up to the host really. He can set the game to no respawns, or specify the number of respawns by individual or team. So you can have 5 respawns each, or 20 per team, or infinite for everyone, or none, etc.
I've been in a few "no-respawn" rooms, and while some people like that level of realism (it does cut down on reckless charges), it can get mighty boring if you are one of the first to die in a 10 minute game. You have the option of switching perspective to any surviving teammates, so you aren't just looking at the ground or the sky where you fell, but still...it's best if the host sets a relatively short time limit to a no-respawn game, otherwise people end up as spectators for large stretches of time.
Personally, I like 20 team respawns for team games, and 5 for individuals. That seems to be the right blend of forcing you to be cautious so you aren't capped immediately, but also allowing you some extra chances if you make a few mistakes or spawn right in front of someone's rifle.
Wow, that was an incredibly long answer to a short question...sorry... [IMG]

I really have to go throught some of the single player stuff so I can unlock all the multiplayer stuff in GR. fremen42 (my friend) is going through unlocking all the extra stuff. Yesterday we just did the Siege gametype, and one other one I think...
Except it was on his Xbox, not mine. [IMG]
I'm going to try and work on unlocking everything this week, so when I host, we can play some other gametypes.

What do you guys suggest playing first, in order to try and
unlock everything? I have not really been paying attention
to what I have really played or released. I do know, I have a few
other soldiers that I released. Any suggestions as far as the order goes?

The slow-mo cheat is very useful in unlocking stuff.

I've unlocked everything except the three extra maps, Stronghold, Creekbed and Wilderness. I was so close to unlocking Stronghold, but for some reason the game didn't let me sucessfully complete one of the missions in campaign mode on the recruit level. I was button-pushing happy and wasn't paying attention when I saved after the mission and now I can't go back to the "unsuccessful" mission post-save. [IMG] I've got to go through the entire campaign again on recruit!!!
For the sniper weapons, the M98 and the 7.62 sniper rifle are the best in this category, IMO. The M98 is simply a beast (I refer to it as a sniping howitzer), however, the 7.62 has a faster recovery after each shot than the M98.
For the automatic weapons, I like the 7.62 rifle and the OICW.
As a demolition guy, I like the SA80. I don't bother using the weapons afforded to the support guys (no accuracy...these weapons are just full-on swiss cheese makers).
BTW, when playing a "Seige" type game, sensors are very helpful.

I need to go further in the main campaign and unlock some more specialists. I guess it's almost mandatory to have one of those highpowered sniper rifles to complete the sniper-only dossier objectives. It looks like I have work to do. [IMG]

Todd, not only does Ibrahim have that great rifle, but his weapon skill and stealth stats are practically maxed out. I think it would be a good idea to go ahead and unlock him (and his ubergun) before trying to unlock siege. Not critical, of course, but I think it would make the job a lot easier.

I went ahead and unlocked Ibrahim's rifle last night on Dave's recommendation and it's great. Very helpful in the sniper only missions. I'm still getting my ass handed to me of course, but I'm taking more of them with me. [IMG]

    Dave,

Gotta love those specialists! I'm going to try to unlock him (and the gun) tonight.

On the missions where you are only to use a sniper, find a spot where there is only one way in, i.e., dead end street or alley, then take out a couple guys, run for your spot and dig yourself in and wait for the rest of the troops to come around the corner and take'em out as they do. That's how I completed a couple of the missions (Red Square and Embassy). It may not be a quick way to complete the mission but it worked for me. As a matter of fact, after unlocking Ibrahim and the M98, I would go into a mission just using him and the M98, even though the mission didn't call for sniper-only. Of course, it all depends on the situation. If the mission calls for a need for support, then I'll bring in the best possible unit that I can. But if I think that I can make it through with just one guy (maybe like on a Recon-type mission) I'll use Ibrahim only with no other troops in the unit.

That's a good strategy too, Armando; I wish I was patient enough to do that. When I try that, I shoot a few guys, run back to my hidey-hole and wait for the soldiers to show up...and wait, and wait, and then say "Hmm, I wonder if they are coming, maybe I should just peek my head out to see...", at which point I venture back out of my hidey-hole and BLAM!!! Yup, they were coming all right. [IMG]

    Armando,

That sounds like a good strategy. I'll have to try to apply it after I unlock Ibrahim. I tend to think like Dave though and lose my patience too early.

Yeah, it definitely takes alot of patience. But I was so determined to complete the missions and unlock things that patience won over being frustrated in failing to beat the darn levels.
It'll probably take me a while to unlock the extra maps. Since the campaigns are so long and I start getting bored with the game's AI, I find myself bopping over to XBL to take on live targets. [IMG]
Also, in addition to the "strategy" that I noted, make sure that you snuggle up to a wall closest to the entry point of the troops. This way, you cut down the angle from which they can shoot at you.[IMG]
Dave, use the map view to check the area before you get up to take a peek around corners. Usually, the enemy troops will show up if they are close to your 20 (I don't know the military lingo for location, but I remember the term in trucker-language from my Dad's days of infatuation with CB radio [IMG] )
    Good luck fellas

Speaking of the map, does anyone have a definitive answer for what causes enemies appear on it? Why, in a multiplayer game, would one person have an enemy on his map and another person would not? I thought it had something to do with sound, but sometimes I pull up a map and I can see a red circle clear across the map, while a teammate standing practically on top of the enemy won't have it on his map. Very puzzling... [IMG]
As I think I may have mentioned before, I cleared the embassy level with a "chuck and duck" method--lob grenades at patrols, duck out of sight, wait for the bang, and then clean up the survivors with the M98. Messy, but effective. [IMG]

Has anyone unlocked the defend mode for any of the maps? Anyone played them?
