The Replacement Killers (1998) 88 min "R" 2:35:1 OAR 19.98 MSRP

The Movie:

Before Yun Fat Chow hit it big in "Crouching Tiger ,Hidden Dragon" he Starred With Mira Sorvino as "John Lee" , a hitman contracted to kill the 7 year old son of a Detective who is investigating "Mr Wei" a chinese drug lord. In the midst of that investigation the detective, played by venerable character actor Micheal Rooker
kills Wei's son. John Lee's inability to kill that youngster neccessitates the bringing in the film's title character's "The Replacement Killers" to finish the job and Lee.

"The Replacement Killers is a decent enough and pretty short action thriller. It plays nicely as a PSP film as the plot isn't overly intricate, so you can follow the action even while trying to follow stuff happening around you. Mira Sorvino is very easy on the eyes although I'm not sure she had this film in mind as a follow up to her Oscar Winning performance in "Mighty Aphrodite". Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) is no John Woo but his direction here is ok and it would lead to better films. Overall "The Replacement Killers" is a nice diversion for your "on the go" film needs.

The UMD:

Sony Does OAR. Quick someone pass me the smelling salts. I nearly fell over when I read the Box for this UMD. Sony who has been the king of Cropping has left the aspect ratio of the film alone and presented it in its regular form and the results are very nice. There is a very slight shimmer in some scenes but overall the picture is clean and the best I've ever seen this film. I would say this UMD looks better than the 7 year old DVD. Imagine what "Ghostbusters" would've looked like if sony had treated that classic film the same as this minor one. Menu's are a bit better at least they are full motion.

The Extras:

Well you did'nt expect Sony to totally change did you ? Nothing, Zip. Well ok a trailer for "Kung Fu Hustle" that's it.

In Conclusion:

This was a decent movie but I just had to support one of Sony's Lone OAR efforts. Whether this was intentional or maybe Sony did not want to remaster the film I don't know
I just know I wish they did it more often.
