ULYSSES ODYSSEUS is being released on BluRay on February 23rd and can be ordered from Amazon.de. in two versions one running 100 minutes and the other 109 minutes. The USA DVD has a running time of 94 minutes. Amazon reports the BluRay as being Region B but you never know if the packaging is correct until you play the BluRay. When I receive my order I will report the Region Code. The movie stars Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn and tells the story of Ulysses returning home after defeating the Trojans in the Trojan War.

Summary
Short version digitally remastered: 100 minutes running time
Unabridged version digitally reamasterd: 109 minutes running time

One of the most powerful adventures of antiquity, masterfully filmed by Mario Camerini.

The trick with the wooden horse has brought down the city of Troy. But the gods are angry with the cunning Odysseus. He and his companions are condemned to stray across the oceans.
They fight against a one-eyed Cyclops, resisting the magic of the Zirze and the bewitching song of the sirens. Odysseus descends to the underworld before he is allowed to return to his native Ithaca. And again he contrives a trick: Disguised as a beggar, he goes to the palace.
Penelope organizes an archery competition among the suitors. Your love should belong to someone who manages to stretch the bow and shoot an arrow through the ears of 12 axes. Odysseus is the only one who succeeds in herculean strength ...

The original negative was restored very elaborately in 2017 to preserve the opulent history film in unprecedented quality. In addition to the theatrical version, this edition contains extensive bonus material and as a special extra that was discarded before its publication in 1955,
extended version on an additional DVD.
In 1954, the negative with the original version (running time: approx. 109 min.) Was cut to a running time of approx. 100 min. The original version only exists on an old cinema copy (35 mm).
The original negative with the cut version (about 100 min. Runtime) was resampled in brilliant 4K resolution.
The present Blu-ray Edition includes both this resampled short version of the film, as well as an extended version of the scenes from the old 35mm movie (not re-sampled).

So the Blu-ray Edition contains both versions of the movie classic:
Blu-ray: Main movie - resampled in 4K from the negative of the short version (running time approx. 105 min.)
DVD: main movie - resampled by the negative of the short version, extended by the cut out scenes (running time approx. 109 min.)

The cunning Odysseus leads the Greeks to victory with the Trojan horse and is condemned by Cassandra to err in the sea with restlessness. While wife Penelope repels the suitors in Ithaca, Odysseus is washed ashore on the Phaeans, where he falls in love with the king's daughter Nausicaa. He remembers the giant Polyphemus, the sirens, sorceress Circe and leaves Nausicaa when he finds his memory again. After twenty years finally back to Ithaca, Odysseus kills all admirers with his son Telemach. - This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Missed opportunity to release in its OAR. Pity. Still, good to have a longer version of the film.

I emailed Colosseo about this wonderful release some time ago and received this kind reply:
"Dear Edmund,
Colosseo brings this title finally out on Blu-ray with English, German and Italian soundtracks, and German and English subtitles.
Both, Al!ve and Colosseo do not understand why Amazon does not state the complete technical details, it is a great damage
for us because no one knows which languages they will get.
Anyway, have a great time watching the film, once you get it.
Warmest regards."
Don't worry, no forced subs on this release. Colosseo seems a phenomenal company who really cares about their product and desires an international clientele. Just pray they keep on bringing us product as fine as this!

Thought I would check imdb and it lists it at 117mins(no location where it was at this length) and 1.66.1. Mario Bava is listed as uncredited on this film.

I saw Helen of Troy when it came out and fell in love instantly with Rosanna Podesta. I was 6. I'm glad for her that she had a long and happy marriage.

Was this originally intended to be widescreen or was this perhaps released that way when the trend happened?

Aspect ratio of Ulysses in Cinema Paradiso scene:

Something that i found:

The Ponti-De Laurentiis production of Ulysses was released in 1954 in Italy but its technical aspects are really confusing. It was originally slated to be photographed in 3-D it but there is no apparent evidence that it was shot that way. Early references state it was shown at a 1.66:1 "wide screen" ratio but being made in Europe in 1954 it was obviously shot for traditional 1.37:1 whether flat or 3-D.

I'm OK with 1.37:1 if it means more image on top and bottom.

According to a website devoted to him, Helen of Troy was one of the career favorites of Robert Wise. I've been railing at WB for years to give fans of Rosanna and the genre a break and finally release this wonderful film in blu-ray form. Just crickets as usual. Can't wait for my Ulysses to arrive from Germany!

At my neighborhood theater in Syracuse, NY, they showed a double bill of ULYSSES & HELEN OF TROY!
