I received an email this morning from UV. Details are here:
Today would be a good day for @Lionsgate @MGM_Studios @ParamountPics @Criterion & other studios to officially announce support for / membership in @movies_anywhere - & for @movies_anywhere to officially announce support for TV shows and seasons. Fragmentation sucks for consumers
<sarcasm>Well that's just great.</sarcasm>
I'm a total non-streamer, discs only for me, but I think this is bad news. We have a growing situation where physical media is in decline, but we are also seeing streaming services beginning to fragment... too many new ones having exclusive content, the abrupt shuttering of others. Cable TV providers juggling content as they lurch towards irrelevance. It's all so very strange.
I think in a fairly short span of time the fragmenting will settle and there will only be a handful of powerhouses that handle all the movie and TV catalogs which I will gladly welcome being that I ditched the disc.
Sadly, I don't think it will be ALL content and people including yourself will be missing out on some amazing films and TV ....
Nobody really know for sure. I can live will not having "all" movies in the world. I only enjoy a select few as it is anyway.
Very true. Streaming services like Netflix and Hulu will continue to rotate films and shows monthly just like cable channels. The studios will never agree to all movies and tv being available for streaming they lose all control and future resale value that way. At best it will be 15-20% of all. I enjoy Netflix and look forward to Disney streaming but to say that streaming offers even 10% of the movies and TV shows that I want to watch would be a huge exaggeration.
Per the e-mail from UltaViolet:
What retailers would those be? Vudu is the only one here in the US that is still accepting and processing UV codes.. FandangoNow no longer supports new UV redemptions. Verizon Fios no longer exists in most parts of the country.
It appears that always has a definitive time frame "when they say so ..."
Join Movies Anywhere and link your VUDU account and any others they support. Those redemptions will then be on all of the linked services. Going forward redeem your UV codes at Movies Anywhere.
All I use now is MA
I guess no one gets my point - Vudu is the ONLY retailer that still fully supports UV.
Oh, and you can't redeem UV codes from Paramount of Lionsgate on MA.
VUDUs's Email regarding the UV shutdown ...
Recently you received an email announcing that UltraViolet will be shutting down its service on July 31, 2019.
The discontinuation of the UltraViolet service will not impact your ability to watch, rent or buy movies and TV shows on Vudu. You currently have an UltraViolet Library connected to your Vudu account, and all of the titles you have in your Vudu account today will continue to be accessible in your Vudu account up to and after UltraViolet shuts down.
To ensure continued access to your titles beyond UltraViolet shutdown, please do not unlink your UltraViolet account from Vudu.
We are working with UltraViolet to make this experience as seamless as possible for you. You will continue to receive updates and information directly from UltraViolet and can visit their site at any time for more information at www.myuv.com.
We have also answered some of the most common questions on our FAQ.
Sooner or later we will have a scenario where like the Communications Industry, there are 3 or 4 major streaming Companies. Netflix, Disney Amazon will probably be the Big 3. I suspect Hulu may get squeezed out since it is a partnership between the Large Media companies ..Warner, ABC, Fox etc.. sooner or later, they will all start asking themselves why they are partnered up and thats usually when the end starts
I think you spelled Apple wrong
Nope. It’s only going to get worse.
Or better. Nobody here truly knows.
What will likely happen is the smaller ones will merge and the big ones will offer more add ons and eventually required package levels exactly like cable and their prices will continue to increase until they become the new cable as far price.
In which case, we should hope that ISPs dont decide to charge based on using Streaming.. since Net Neutrality no longer exists in the US .. So far I haven't seen that but I'm sure at some point it will come
That would be shooting themselves in the foot so very doubtful. They never did it before we had net neutrality.
