Hi everyone,

Using key metrics like cost per 4K title, HDR brightness range, audio formats, content diversity and release trends, I’ve analyzed data from streaming platforms.

Here's a simple chart comparing Cost per 4K Title (in the US, for reference) and Peak Brightness (HDR) for each streaming service:
  • Blue bars represent the cost per 4K title (in USD) for each service, with lower values indicating better 'cost to value' ratio.
  • Orange line shows the peak brightness level (in nits) for each platform. (Stan Australia is included for comparison purposes)

Image

This visualization can help us to understand which platforms offer the best balance between affordability ($) and high-brightness HDR. For example:
  • Netflix and Disney+ offer some of the lowest costs per 4K title, though their overall monthly prices aren’t the most budget-friendly...
  • Paramount+ has the highest peak brightness, although at a higher cost per title. Prime Video may have a lower cost per 4K title, making it a budget-friendly option, but its HDR brightness is closer to average.

Here’s the bar chart showing the Average Monthly 4K Releases by Streaming Service (since July/2024):

Image

  • Observations:
    • Netflix leads significantly with around 50 new 4K releases per month.
    • Paramount+ (US) also has a high release rate compared to other platforms.
    • Apple TV+ and Disney+ release far fewer 4K titles monthly, indicating a slower rate of content expansion in 4K for these services.

I hope these comparisons help highlight which services strike a good balance between cost, HDR brightness and monthly releases, so you can make the best choice. After all, it’s your money! :)

Hi everyone,

I'm happy to share an interactive visual journey that showcases how major streaming platforms have expanded their 4K movie offerings over the past decade. This (beta) video takes us from the early days of 4K streaming in 2014 to a projected view of the landscape by December 31st, 2024.
  • A visual timeline showing the growth of 4K content on platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+ and Paramount+.
  • Insights into which service led the race in 4K content and how others have caught up.
  • Data tracked and catalogued by me through 4KFilmDb, with an estimated accuracy variance of up to ±20%.

Introducing the 4K Interactive Film Map!

I'm happy to announce one of the most exciting features I've created: the 4K Filming Locations Map This new (beta) tool lets us explore over 2000 filming locations around the world.

Is this concept new? Not really, but unlike ad-heavy sites with limited selections, the 4K Interactive Film Map offers a straightforward, ad-free experience with an extensive and growing list of film locations. It's just getting started. Expect rapid growth in titles and ongoing refinements.

Any suggestions, I’d be happy to hear them.

The final version of the 4K Playback Quality Report is here. This updated report will now include:
  • True/Native 4K Source verification for resolution authenticity.
  • A Demo-Worthy Scenes Table with timestamps showcasing HDR and Dolby Atmos highlights.
These enhancements aim to deliver a more comprehensive analysis of playback quality. Stay tuned as the updated reports roll out with the next 4K release updates...

Hi all,

The only way to quickly implement the creation and placement of the full playback quality report for now is as follow:

1) The "4K Verified" badge will be visible for titles with playback quality details.

1732612644200.png

2) Once we click "Generate Full Playback Report" we'll be directed to the movie page where we'll have the option to view the details.

1732612628939.png

I apologise for this extra step, but I’ll be streamlining this process once I have more capacity. :)

P.S.: The initial selection criteria for the 4K movies are as follows:
  • Available for streaming on Netflix
  • HDR metadata is available
  • Dolby Atmos support
  • Any region, but must also be available in Australia (for verification and accuracy purposes without relying on a VPN, which slows down the speed!)
  • Documentaries, animations and musicals are excluded for now.

Hi guys,

Here are a couple of HDR brightness values for 4K titles available to rent/buy on Apple TV (iTunes).

1732781464123.png

Apple TV: Peak of 897 nits / Avg of 497 nits (For comparison, Netflix: Peak of 509 nits / Avg of 500 nits)

1732781479407.png

Apple TV: Peak of 2636 nits / Avg of 747 nits (this is exactly the same transfer as the UHD disc!) within the BT.2020 colour container.
(Regardless of these HDR metadata values, it offers pristine reference video and audio quality).

I'm happy to share some news:

1) 47 new 4K titles added for Paramount+ (CA & UK)

I've added 47 retroactive 4K titles for Canada and UK regions. These won’t appear on the "Latest Additions" since they’re historical updates, but they’re now fully available in the database, including the Stats page!

2) MAX Platform Now Tracked!
Starting today, MAX is being tracked. While updates will be displayed starting next week, this means we'll have access to all the latest information on MAX’s 4K content, including HDR & Atmos and other key details!

Hi all,

Being a Star Wars fan myself, after re-visiting the sequel trilogy from 2015-2019 recently on Disney+, I've created a mini-table with a detailed breakdown of the cinematography used in them. This highlights the original technical choices behind the 4K visuals of The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

FilmThe Force AwakensThe Last JediThe Rise of Skywalker
Negative Stock35mm + IMAX 70mm35mm + IMAX 65mm35mm + IMAX 65mm
Resolution (DI)4K DI (scanned at 6K/8K)4K DI (scanned at 6K)4K DI (scanned at 6K)
HDRHDR10, Dolby VisionHDR10, Dolby VisionHDR10, Dolby Vision
Aspect Ratio2.39:1 (IMAX 1.43:1 scenes)2.39:1 (expanded for IMAX scenes)2.39:1 (expanded for IMAX scenes)
Atmos MixYes (Original)Yes (Original)Yes (Original)
Cameras and LensesPanavision (anamorphic lenses) + IMAXARRIRAW (2.8K, 3.4K, 6.5K) + Panavision anamorphicPanavision + IMAX cameras with vintage lenses
PQ/AQ/HDR5/5/5 out of 54/4/5 out of 54.5/5/5 out of 5

Key Insights:
  • The Force Awakens: Shot on 35mm to keep that nostalgic analog aesthetic.
  • The Last Jedi: Mixed formats with ARRIRAW digital capture and Panavision anamorphic lenses.
  • The Rise of Skywalker: Vintage Panavision lenses introduced subtle imperfections, lending a nostalgic and filmic feel.
  • Dolby Vision HDR grading and Dolby Atmos audio mixing were embedded into the filmmaking process. <- This will be part of a new feature I'm planning to implement, to inform whether the original tech specs of a movie production originally considered HDR/Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio mix, or if the streaming service/distribution company has done a regrading process, applying HDR/Atmos metadata to enhance brightness, colour and contrast (for the video) or spatial soundscape (for the audio).
Interesting case study of The Force Awakens I found on YouTube:

Hello Everyone,

It's time to unveil the Best 4K Streaming Movies of 2024, the collection of top-tier 4K movies from the database that excel in Dolby Atmos, HDR brightness and overall film content. This selection celebrates the best of 2024 (while also marking the 11th month since I first created my Google Sheet to catalogue my initial ~100 movies from 2023), based on my comprehensive data from all movies released on streaming this year.

What’s in the List?
  • Best Dolby Atmos: Movies featuring excellent Atmos (and overall) audio, perfect for demo purposes when the UHD disc isn’t available.
  • Best 4K HDR Range: Movies that excel in the perfect brightness range (peaks between 1000-2000 nits ; averages between 400-600 nits) designed to push and test the limits of the HDR display's capabilities.
  • Top Overall 4K Movies: Films that represent the best of 4K streaming in 2024, combining good to excellent content quality & storytelling.
Where to Explore?
Head over to the dedicated page:
Explore the Best of 2024
Use the filters to switch between categories.

How I Chose the Best
Selections were made based on my unique streaming data, including HDR metadata, Dolby Atmos scores and aggregated film ratings (covering movies released up to December 16, 2024).
Note: The order of titles within categories is random and does not reflect rankings or relevancy.
Note2: For fairness, Docs have been excluded from the 2024 selection.

Does anyone notice the only 4K movie that excels across all three categories? :)

A couple of news items...

1) Max Non-US Titles Now on 4KFilmDb
  • While I primarily track 4K availability for the US region only, I've started capturing Max titles beyond the US border. Now, you’ll find 4K HDR movies from other regions such as France (FR), Portugal (PT), Romania (RO), Chile (CL), Brazil (BR), Singapore (SG) and Poland (PL). This effort is designed to cater to 4KFilmDb members and Max platform subscribers. This is just the beginning... for now, I’m using plain text (as shown below). Soon, I’ll replace these with proper country flag icons for better visibility. Max often releases exclusive content (like Dunkirk)in select regions, likely due to licensing restrictions in the USA. By tracking these titles, I’m providing more comprehensive data while also capturing HDR metadata for key titles, which will serve as input for the 4K API in the future!
  • In the next few days, I’ll be restructuring the Max page to include dedicated buttons for both US and exclusive non-US 4K titles, making navigation easier.

2) Playback Quality Insights Page is Live!
  • This dedicated page showcases (using a sub-view of the All Movies page) the already existing in-depth technical playback metrics for 4K movies streaming on Netflix. Whether HDR brightness, Dolby Atmos audio performance or bitrate stability, this page is our go-to for fully assessing streaming quality. Again, expect more titles to be added to the page soon.

Quick Changelog for December 24, 2024:

1) Max and Best of 2024 pages are now exclusively to members (or until further notice). This change aims to encourage free sign-ups so I can assess whether to continue tracking Max in 2025. :)

2) Weekly Picks script/algorithm now includes the Max platform, tailoring recommendations to your preferences. Check it out for weekly suggestions. Don't forget to update your preferences to ensure the recommendations stay accurate for you.
