I just got my new 56H80 installed last night and it really is a beauty!
I "calibrated" it (I'm a novice at this) using the Avia DVD and the picture looks very nice, but I'm worried it may be set too high and could damage the tube.
Right now the contrast and brightness are set to around 70. This is higher than the 50 I saw recommended somewhere, but 50 was really dim and the Avia disc seemed to suggest higher values. The CRT was definitely nowhere near blooming.
    Any advice?
    Thanks!

    Greetings
With regard to contrast ... Too high!!!!
Avia shows you where the "RED LINE" is for contrast.
Do you drive your car at 5999 rpm because the red line is at 6000 rpm?
Take your contrast down to 30 to 35 range and get used to it there.
    Regards

Yeah, my problem was I was not experienced enough with the Avia disc. I was trying to calibrate it quickly and missed the critical part. I went through the procedure again and it now looks terrific at about 33. The previous "dimness" had been due to the wrong black level setting.
    Thanks for the help!

Absolutely. That is way too high. It will take some time getting used to the lower contrast and you will need to watch the set with the lights dimmed. In the day, that can be a problem, but I have thick curtains on my windows and a curtain for the doorway.
I had a 36" Wega, but is has developed some serious problems and is going back, to be replaced by either the 43" Hitachi or 47" Panasonic HDTV, whichever I can fit into my door (I live in an old house, designed by someone with a claustrophobia).
