The Integra website indicates a $200 discount through August 30 in addition to the $50 discount for previous upgraders.

Also, Onkyo is coming out with the TX-DS989VER2 receiver for $3300, which could be the original 'DS989 plus the upgrade. The 'DS989VER2 is THX Ultra 2-certified. See www.crutchfield.com for more info. on the new receiver.

KUDOS to Onkyo owners. My admiration to Onkyo for developing this upgrade for its existing flagship receiver customers. I hope this is a new trend that will continue onto other receiver manufacturers for their respective flagships and even for lesser models as well.

Next step: On board DVD-A and DSD decoding

Well I checked Onkyo's site on Monday afternoon and the upgrade was available for order. No sooner did I get home to obtain my serial number, they had taken it off of their "Shop Onkyo" site.

Here's a hint. Create an account for "Shop Onkyo" first, and then enter your receiver's registration on line. Doing so will earn you 10 bonus points for creating your account, and 5 bonus points for registering your receiver! The bonus points may be used like cash for anything sold in the "Shop Onkyo" area.

It was back up on Tuesday and the order was placed. Here is the scoop on what to expect with the upgrade, and how it will go down.

The upgrade for TX-DS989 / DTR-9.1 / RDC-7 adds THX Ultra2 certification, DTS 96/24 processing and a variable subwoofer crossover. This upgrade involves making several component changes and the installation of new firmware, requiring that the unit be shipped to a specially certified Service Center. The upgrade kit also includes the newest DTS demo disc.

Upgrade Time Line

Day 1 – Upgrade ordered on ShopOnkyo.com. A new carton with inner foams is sent out via UPS ground. The new carton includes a prepaid shipping label / call tag for UPS Blue 2nd day air service.

Day 10 – Customer packs unit in new carton and ships it to the service center using the prepaid shipping tag.

Day 12 – Unit is received by the authorized service center.

Day 15 – Upgraded unit is shipped back to customer via UPS Blue air service.

Day 17 – The customer receives upgraded unit.

* Timeline shown is approximate and may vary dependent on customer location for the UPS ground shipment of the new carton. Days quoted are normal business days and do not include weekends.

Spence

Yeah, I love Onkyo/Integra, especially their high-end products. Denon should be taking notes.

Placed my order yesterday. I also got an email response indicating that the new upgrade does fix the audio dropout issue with DVDs and that the Satellite dropout issue is a different situation altogether.

Thank You for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support.

The latest upgrade will fix the audio drop outs on DVD movies with the

Dolby Digital problem.

It does not address the issue with Satellite drop outs. Dolby Laboratories

and the satellite companies are researching the issue right now.

Again, thank you for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support,

if you need further Assistance feel free to call us at 800-229-1687.

Comments: Will the latest upgrade for TX-DS989s fix the Dolby digital

problems encountered with some DVDs and satellite transmissions?

Has anyone received their upgraded receiver back yet?

My box came in on Wednesday. The receiver is all packed up and will ship out for re-fit today. I hope to have it back in the rack by next weekend.

My question for anyone who has completed the entire upgrade (i.e. received their upgraded receiver) is this;

Aside from changing the interal proccessing hardware, did Onkyo replace the front control cover so that it accuratly represents the "THX Ultra 2" upgrade, or did the throw yet another "bumper sticker" on it (I sure as hell hope not).

Regards,

GREAT!
UPS bumped my "2nd Day Air" expected delivery to the Onkyo service center out to July 10th! I shipped it on Friday, July 5th! :frowning:
According to the tracking number, it doensn't appear to be on a plane at all, but rather on a truck, traveling state to state!
What the heck is with UPS?!

It may be 2nd day air shipping back(not to the service center).
I'm afraid not my friend. The shipping tag from my home to the Onkyo service center said "2nd Day Air", and so does the tracking page. Also turn-around time for the upgrade was quoted by Onkyo as being seven calendar days (two days there, a couple-few days for the upgrade, and two days back).
I'm just anxious as heck and I miss my baby! :D

I don't beleive ther is upgradability built into the 939. I had one before I got my 989, it is a great receiver but I think what you have is as far as Onkyo planned to go with that model. You could call customer service and run it by them...can't hurt.
