Two jakes Laserdisc,,,Widescreen? (1 Viewer)

Started to watch the 2 jakes LD last night and noticed that the widescreen not only had black bar on the top & bottom but on the sides also?!?!

Seems kind of foolish since the picture could have been bigger without losing anything, anyone have an explanation why?

I've never seen that particular LD, but if the sidebars are narrow strips, it sounds like an example of windowboxing. On LD, that was sometimes done to compensate for a TV's overscan.

Correct on the narrow strips, That sounds like the case. Never saw a windowboxed before...guess it was pretty rare.

The only other widescreen LD I noticed this on was CHINATOWN, which I believe was reissued on LD about the same time as THE TWO JAKES.
