I should probably just hand my wallet over to TT based on what they have in the queue.

Frankly, I am just glad SOMEONE is releasing earlier Woody Allen work (as actor or director) on Blu-ray. I think Woody Allen might not want to go the Criterion route, because he wants his films to be "bare bones," with no bonus features, though I can image the isolated film score will not upset him.

As for TT's Blu-ray of The Egyptian, I am very glad I purchased it. The commentary track on that TT release is a fantastic, film-nerd treat.

It'll be interesting to see what, if any, difference there is. Presumably Twilight Time's release will be via MGM who, as far as I know, have the US rights via Studio Canal.. As reported by Home Cinema Choice magazine, the UK Paramount BD was from a HD remaster paid for by Sky Television (they did THE ITALIAN JOB at the same time - spot the connection?), who first broadcast it about 5 years ago. It looked great on TV and looks great on the Paramount disc.

I ran a very good print of ZULU in the 80's @ The Hippodrome Theatre in Balto.,Md. Only trouble was the Japanese subtitles on the left side of the screen!!!

A very recent Facebook post by TT said they had "several of his films in the pipeline" so it looks like TT will end up the primary purveyor of all films Woody Allen and not much else will come through MGM. Tough I guess it may depend on what their definition of "several " is.

While we wait for these releases, I'd be curious to hear Robert Harris's views on the Paramount vs TT versions of Zulu as to which might be closer to the original film version.

It's great that Twilight is releasing Khartoum. I was just checking my Cinerama web site for how many weeks Khartoum, Hallelujah Trail and the Greatest Story Ever Told (I think all owned by MGM) played at various Cinerama movie theatres. Khartoum and Hallelujah Trail were about the same but Greatest Story Ever Told would double or triple that number for the same theatre.

Fascinating details re the above films. It would indicate that GREATEST STORY was more popular than legend would indicate. I saw it as a child here in Melbourne at the Plaza, which was our Cinerama theater. I also saw THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM and HOW THE WEST WAS WON there in their initial seasons. (Although I was six or under for these screenings, I still remember certain scenes from each movie)
I'm guessing that the long production schedule which was fraught with mishap and bad weather inflated its cost and thus it came to be known as a flop. It's attention to historic detail is breathtaking, still leaving all other movies about Jesus in the shade. Also, it's clever depiction of Satan (played by Donald Pleasance, ideally cast) is unlike any other attempted on film. It subtly shows his ongoing warfare against Christ, referred to often in the gospels but never presented on screen in this intelligemt way. While it has its flaws, to my mind they are far outweighed by its virtues. A great pity that the original cut was not offered on blu ray, or at least a choice between the premiere and edited versions via 'branching'. Thanks RolandL

No, I don't think so. It appears nowhere among the Top 20 releases for either 1965 or 1966. Those long bookings may have been guarantees the theaters had to agree to in order to book the film (thinking it would be a hit based on Stevens' reputation and the subject matter).

I can tell you we went to see it on July 3, 1965, in Philadelphia (we were there for the 4th of July celebrations the next day before heading off to NYC for the World's Fair). It was a hot, rainy night, and there may have been five other people in the theater with us. I had wanted to go to The Sound of Music, but my aunt and uncle had already seen it (so had I) and wanted to see something new.

I think all three films listed by RolandL (all of which I saw in Cinerama on first release) were box office flops - especially THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, which, after its Cinerama showings in the UK didn't receive a proper general release but only had a few "selected" showings. Not surprisingly, given that General Gordon was a British hero, KHARTOUM did much better in the UK than the US, running 9 months at the Casino Cinerama. At the time I thought it too talky and slow-going and not really a huge screen epic action film as advertised but seeing it on MGM HD recently, it came across much better than I remembered. As for THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL, well, I don't like comedy westerns anyway, but that was one of the most dismally unfunny and awful westerns I've ever had the misfortune to sit through.

December 26th @ 4 EST. They announced it on their FB page a couple of weeks ago. I actually set up an appointment in my calendar so I would not forget. Lol. I'm really bad and my wallet hates me.
