I understand that polk and swan use a silk dome tweeter and I am curious as to what the major differences are. If the ring radiator in the LSi series are so good why does swan use the silk dome? Personally I think the silk tweeter is much smoother on my RT800's but what does swan do differently, aside from an external mount? I assume they are not exactly the same and I probably will pick up a pair of 2.1's but I am just curious.

Costs is one thing. The ring radiator is more expensive than a run in the mill silk dome. Because of the patent, only one source to purchase from on a wholesale level. Also, the ring radiator is not the easiest tweeter to work with. Using the ring radiator would mean a complete redesign.

Here is the TN28 from parts express.

Here is the Vifa XT25 shielded. Non shielded

You can compare the differences in the T/S specs.

At least some of the other Polks also use Vifa silk tweets. Swans uses their own drivers made by Hi Vi research.
