Did the post telling us about the TVAuthority give away mention that the email address we provided would be put into their mailing list?

Yes, it did. You needed to tell them if you didn't want to be on their mailing list or not.

Why? Is there a problem?

No problem really but I do recall that now and I thought I had said no to the mailing list but I could be wrong. I was just wondering why I was getting mail from them. I, like almost anybody else with a long term email address, get so much spam I didn't want anymore.
