Looking at new TV's for the apartment, and we watch a lot of TV in addition to DVDs and gaming. Would the "constant" 4:3 viewing on the 16:9 screen rapidly wear out the middle of the screen? Or is this not a big problem anymore?

Most tvs can 'stretch' the image to fill the screen. Some do it better then others. I've viewed a little 4:3 material on my 53" Panasonic and it looks okay, but not great. So I leave 4:3 material to my 32" Toshiba.
My suggestion: have 2 tvs. [IMG]
