Bonanza season 2, Rawhide season 4, and Hawaii Five O season 10 were all done around the same time (i.e., late 2010 through 2011) and none received the full remastering treatment. It is possible CBS was experimenting with releasing more quickly by using existing video masters during that time, but then decided against continuing for future seasons. Gunsmoke some how missed that scenario. I believe new masters of season 10 of Hawaii Five O were used within the full series set. I'm betting Rawhide season 4 and Bonanza season 2 have been remastered by now for syndication use. Unfortunately, they typically don't go back an re-release to DVD when newer prints are available. My guess, too many complaints about having to re-buy or whether those that purchased before should get the new sets for free or just having two different sets out in the market at the same time (or having to recall the first set). I would gladly re-buy Bonanza season 2 and Rawhide season 4 if made available with remastered prints.

Great points! Hopefully if Bonanza gets an all-in-one, that video master issue from the second go will be rectified in one way or another.

So do you think that shows like Petticoat Junction will clear through because Viacom/CBS are back together?

Maybe. I can't imagine them sitting on a seven-season show forever out of spite. Once Bonanza and Gunsmoke are done — likely just a matter of time — they'll have to have something else to release.

There is precedent: not only was H5O Season 10 remastered for the complete series set, the remastered season is also for sale on VUDU, and likely other streaming services as well. So fingers crossed for BONANZA Season 2!

Now that Les Moonves is gone and Viacom and CBS are back together again, I think things will improve. I don't think every stalled show will stay stalled forever. Eventually they'll be getting caught up with the other shows they started that they need to finish. This is not like the Disney-Fox merger. Viacom only exists because of CBS. They exist because they legally had to divest themselves of their syndication holdings. Now that those laws are gone, they can take them back. It's the corporate equivalent of an on-again off-again marriage.

Matthew:

I hope you are right. I would love to see CBS workout a deal with Shout or similar distributor to release the three remaining seasons of The Defenders.

Right. I did not mean to imply CBS remastered H5O season 10 for the complete series set, but rather to complete the package for syndication use (both broadcast and streaming). I'm sure CBS will have Bonanza season 2 remastered for syndication use, just not sure it will ever be released on physical media.

For what it's worth, the syndication bible still says that season 2 of Bonanza isn't available in HD at this time.

Of course that doesn't necessarily mean that's the case, but I suspect it's accurate given that the syndication bible has just been recently updated and the fact that it also reflects season 10 of Bonanza as being available in HD.

And interestingly, it appears that Gunsmoke has been transferred to HD in its entirety. Good sign that this one will make it to the end with the finish line in sight.

I’m disappointed that Black Lightning is DVD MOD only (the first CW DC show not to be released on Blu-ray). I guess sales of S1 wasn’t good, which is a shame, as I prefer the series to the Arrowverse shows (and BL will be appearing in the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover). I guess it joins Fargo S3 and Legion S2 as HD series I buy digitally, unavailable on Blu-ray. I hope Swamp Thing, for all its behind-the-scenes issues, receives a Blu-ray release in the near future.

The issue with Petticoat Junction is extreme music rights clearances for seasons 4-7. They started using lots of songs including Beatles songs so this is even more complicated and expensive then instrumental music clearances. Since sales on this one were less than Beverly Hillbillies and only modest I think this one may be done unfortunately. I think they will finish Beverly Hillbillies though.

In hindsight, it would have been great if series like "Brilliant But Cancelled" released on dvd back in the mid-2000s had continued.

But alas, that dvd series only lasted two releases and never released anything further. (IIRC, the first dvd was EZ Streets, while the second dvd was a compilation of crime dramas).

I didn't know PJ had used Beatles songs in its later seasons (when Meredith MacRae took over from Gunilla Hutton as Billie Jo)!

I think at least one maybe two but they used quite a few popular songs. I haven't seen the other episodes in a couple decades but I remember someone mentioning Beatles and many other popular songs in the old Petticoat Junction thread. They had quite a few singing episodes in season 1 and 2 then stopped in season 3 but then had a lot more singing episodes starting with season 4.

As I mentioned for the Beatles I am going by what was reported in the previous thread. The main point has nothing to do with the Beatles it is there are lots of songs and music that would have to be cleared and the cost of that would far outweigh selling a few thousand copies on DVD. So this series is dead in the water unless they release them with the songs cut out like Gomer Pyle but I doubt they will do that with the previous negative response they got for music edits.
