Simply question that’s stumped me. I have a Sony Bravia TV and a Yamaha receiver but my TV apps audio will not play through my receiver. I have all my components going through my receiver (DirecTV box, Blu-ray and Roku). I’d like to get rid of my Roku and use the TV’s apps. Before I dig into it, I thought I’d ask the masses. Do I need to disconnect everything from my receiver and connect them to the TV HDMI ports and use a digital optical cable to transfer audio to my receiver? If I do this, what will I loose downgrading from HDMI audio to digital optical audio? My surround is a 5.1 for what it’s worth. I have other questions about surround sound systems that I’ll save for later. Thanks in advance and have a great weekend.

Do your TV and Receiver both have ARC (audio return channel)?

If so, make sure it’s enabled. Connect the receiver to the TV using the ARC HDMI ports on both. When watching content on the TV with audio, the receiver should be set of the TV Audio HDMI port or however it’s labeled on your receiver.

That’s how it works with my Sony and Denon.

If you connect all video devices to the TV and use optical out from TV to recover, you might only get stereo audio out, no surround.
Thanks for the reply and that is what I thought. I failed to mention that I use a Logitech Harmony Remote and I believe that’s where the rub is.

Remote control has nothing to do with audio :)

I’ve got a Logitech Harmony, and configured it to work with my new eARC-capable TV - AVR combo. :)

If you want to use your Harmony and use the TV as the HDMI switching device, just update all your activities accordingly. Tedious but not terribly difficult.

I like this idea and will give it a try. If it works, I’ll have to modify my remote a little bit that’s not a big deal. Thanks in advance.

I use the digital audio out from my 2015 Samsung H6350 to my 2010 Marantz AVReceiver and I do get 5.1 surround from at least the Netflix app. With a 5.1 movie played on my cable box connected to the TV via HDMI, if I set the AVR to TV input it is only stereo but setting the AVR to the cable box input which is digital optical, I get 5.1. The TV sound settings have Dolby grayed out in this case. I will try the Youtube app which is supposed to support 5.1 as of 8/2021 but I do not have a subscription so 5.1 may be disabled.
