I'm starting this disscussion based on the thread about Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion starring Lisa Kudrow.
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/uub/...TML/007868.htm
My problem is that I see Phoebe from Friends in every role that Kudrow has been in.
I want to discuss other TV actors that have branched out and done movies, succesfully or not. Have they been able to break out of the role that made them a star? It's tough on actors who have played the same character for years on TV and try to do something else. They may be great actors, but our memories of their established character get in the way.
For example I could never see Ted Danson as anybody but Sam Malone.
For an example of somebody who's broken out, I'll bring up George Clooney. Besides Batman & Robin I think he's had a great movie career so far. The man knows how to pick good directors and screenplays, with an interesting character for him to play.
I'll just mention a few more names to get this thing rolling:
Woody Harrelson
Shelly Long (sorry I love Cheers)
David Caruso
Tim Allen
Alan Alda
The entire cast of Friends.....
Discuss.

Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis have both left their TV roots far behind...

Two I completely forgot about. Although to be fair, Bussom Buddies was never a popular show.
Anybody else have any comments? I thought I'd finally started a thread that was going to some good responses.
