I'm hoping you can help me remember a French film I saw about 10 years ago. I am not sure of the exact date of the film, but believe it is actually older than early 90s.

The plot goes something like this: a guy and his wife are on a road trip and stop at a rest station. When the guy comes out of the bathroom, his wife is gone and he never sees her again. He is obsessed with finding out what happened to her and eventually...

runs into the guy who abducted her, who then proceeds to kill the husband, too.

I remember it being very creepy but also very gripping.

My thanks to anyone who can turn these vague descriptions into a title!

    Chris

The Vanishing by George Sluizer, from 1988.
Not to be confused with the very inferior remake with Jeff Bridges which was released 5 years later and strangely enough, also directed by Sluizer!

And I really hope that anyone who hadn't seen the movie didn't read the spoiler! [IMG]
This is one of the most chilling, creepy movies I've ever seen.

If you haven't seen the foreign version, DO NOT watch the American remake. Not only is it a terrible movie, but you can sort of guess the ending to the original by watching it.

I first saw it when I was in college and had a friend who would occasionally bring movies over to watch. I had never heard of this one, and absolutely no preconceptions about it. Yikes!!

I think sometimes my favorite movie experiences are ones like that---where I have no clue what the movie is about. Nowadays, it's getting hard to see a movie without knowing everything about it from trailers, reviews, etc.

Yes Ruth, it does star Keifer. I made the same mistake you did and I'm always kicking myself for doing it.
