NRG Acoustics HJ-17 I recently bought, well was given to me brand new. It has x4 2-way 200watt speakers, x1 3-way 400watt speaker, and x1 10" Subwoofer @ 800watts for 2000watt total system. My question is what receiver amp to get to drive these speakers for my theater setup? I have no idea what to buy..cheaper the better but willing to spend up to $500 if that's possible. Thank you for any help

I hate to say it, and maybe someone else is familiar with NRG Acoustics, but I looked them up and they appear to be what's referred to as "White Van" speakers. NRG has a web site, that claims this set costs $2,000, but you can get them new on eBay for $300. Plus, the web site gives ZERO information about them. Nothing, except a few absurd claims like "2000 Watts Total System Power". Well, they're unpowered speakers, so they don't have any power. There's no indication if the sub is powered or not, and I expect it isn't. It's probably a Bose style bass module/crossover, but there is no information whatsoever on the web site.

Get something cheap, anything should do. Try a refurb Denon from accessories4less.com but don't invest much without expecting to replace them sooner than later.

Here's the page on their web site.

Sorry, but that doesn't make it look any better. The wiring diagram on the bottom left doesn't make any sense. Plus, their description sort of confirms some of my suspicions. They appear to have extremely small (2.5") full range drivers, but they call them "2 way" or '3 way" based on the number of drivers in the cabinet. That's just flat out lying. If you post a pic of the back of the bass module and one of the speakers, where the connections are, then I should see how everything connects and can give some guidance.

Here's the photos... definitely need an amp...but I'm confused on the sub.. shouldn't it be rca cables?

Definitely "White Van" junk speakers. I sure wouldn't invest too much in a receiver for these. May want to sell them off or give to Goodwill and invest in a decent budget all-in-one Home Theater set up from a name brand.

OK, that's what I was expecting. It's not a subwoofer, but a bass module, which is why it has speaker wire connections instead of an RCA. You can, and will probably want to add an actual, powered subwoofer that will connect to the subwoofer output on a surround receiver.

Don't expect much with these speakers. They're probably actually worth, at most, $50 for the whole set. So, like the printed wiring diagram (not the one on the box) shows, you run the center and surround speaker outputs directly to those speakers. Then, you run the L&R speaker outputs to the input on the bass module, and then out to the L&R speakers. The speakers won't be able to reproduce any bass at all. I mean NONE. So, the bass module is there to help with that a little.

If you know someone who has a receiver you can try them with first, I'd suggest that. I think you should listen to them first, before spending any $ on a receiver.
