Ok guys and gals, I did a search and really did not get the answer I am looking for. I have a 36" Sony XBR400 and I want a true progressive scan player. I do not want one that says progressive scan but uses a line doubler. How do I know what is a true progressive scan player?

There are few prog scan players these days that -don't- do 3:2 pulldown deinterlacing.. pretty much any one you look into will do what you're asking for.

The only "progressive scan" DVD player I know of that doesn't do 3:2 pulldown is the Pioneer DV-434. (I believe it's discontinued.) There might have been other players of this ilk, but this is the only one I am aware of.
But most of the progressive scan players sold today by the major manufacturers (such as Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Denon, JVC, etc) will do the 3:2 pulldown, so you shouldn't have any worries there.

AFAIK, the difference between the two is:

'true' progressive includes 3:2 processing (when necessary) within their line-doubler command set.
