Seriously, though, there are issues to complain to columbia about to BBB that they are dealing with (mostly with Record Clubs, VHS tape clubs) but this isn't it.. there is a really good one going on over the DS9 Videocasette club offering..
Yup. Basically you pay membership due and *voila* you are now BBB member. There is no background or complaint history check. You just provide contact info and pay a fee.
Besides BBB doesn't have any enforcement power. Against big corporations they will just say, "Sorry, we tried but no cigar."
True. A lot of shady companies will join them, first thing they do, and then use the BBB name to claim legitimacy.
They are essentially a Chamber of Commerce or sorts. Any company that pays can join.
They do some good work, but as mentioned, they have no enforcement power. And many in the business world (especially those that have gotten ripped off by BBB members) have little respect for them.
The FBI are not a joke, are not powerless and are respected (feared) by many. Still, had you filed your complaint with the FBI, it wouldn't have done much either.
If you don't like a product some company is offering, that's no reason to report them. As others have said here: don't buy it, vote with your wallet. You're free not to buy it - as free as they are to offer it for sale.
A company can be a BBB member, but still have complaints against it in the BBB's records. It's up to the consumer to check the BBB's customer complaint history against a company to determine whether they wish to do business with them. I may check with the BBB before I hire a carpet cleaning company, but a movie studio? Yer barking up the wrong tree.
