I'm thinking about replacing my 4 year old scanner and just started doing some research. I checked PC World's top 10 scanners list and the 3rd one from their list, the Visioneer OneTouch 9000 is within my budget ($100).

One thing I noticed from the review though is that this model doesn't have a transparency adapter while the top 2 scanner (which cost more) do.

What exactly is this adapter and what does it do?

well at my university, transparency adapters are used for photocopying overhead transparencies. you know the thin clear plastic pages teachers put on overheads to shine on a screen behind them. since the plastic is transparent to let light through scanning them can be troublesome at times.
