If you want to really replicate the theatrical experience, then you should be listening to standard Dolby Digital at 320kbps. Thats what fits between the sprocket holes of 35mm film.

There is a HUGE difference to me. I have said before, but even my wife said "WOW" when I switched between the two on Casino Royale.

Anyway, the point of me posting in this thread is... I WAS about to go neutral by buying my first HDDVD player. I will be waiting and watching this before I plunge. I simply do NOT buy discs without lossless and I certainly am not going to buy into a format when a new blockbuster such as this does not include it.

But again, I am waiting and seeing - I can only imagine this is some type of misprint.

The Star Trek TOS set is being released by CBS, owned by Paramount but a different company none the less. CBS is releasing all of the television holdings of Paramount. The Star Trek features will be released by Paramount Home Video.

The xbox is the issue. It can't do lossless.
AN old receiver as long as it has 5.1 analog ins would be Hi Def audio capable as long as your HD player has analog outs like the Toshiba A1 for instance.

Well to be fair, on Casino Royale you were switching back and forth between a standard Dolby Digital track encoded at 448kbps and an uncompressed PCM track. The Dolby Digital plus track encoded at 3.0 Mbits might not be as dramatic a difference.

Quite possibly.

Anyway, I am hoping this is a mistake. I was kind of getting excited about a new piece of electronics in the house! :)

I will be more inclined to jump in if it is just a stupid decision by Paramount. If it is a space issue, I am done.

If it were a space issue then Batman Begins and Superman Returns wouldn't be able to have True HD either.

And we might never see it supported if there is only one studio or a handful of titles that offer it. At the very least, no one that has spent good money on their gear now can make use of it.

They do....my doesn't

Besides, my receiver doesn't have HDMI.

All of my stuff I bought when I was a junior in High School. The small Infinity Primus set, the two Towers, bookshelves, and the big 12 inch subwoofer. And then a JVC 5.1 receiver. That was three years ago, and I still love it, I had to buy it all piece by piece. Took me a few months to get everything together.

Basically, what I'm asking, what kind of speaker set up do you need to actually enjoy the higher bitrates? A cheap home theater in box will always suck.

Right now the cheapest way would be to have a stand alone player with 5.1 analog out connections, and a receiver that has 5.1 analog in.

As far as I know right now the only receivers that can decode the advanced audio codecs through HDMI are the 2 Onkyo units. Unless something else has come out that I didn't see.

I had read that it would but I don't own one so I don't know for sure.

This doesn't either. The extras are on a second disc. The PIP feature will be 480p as that is mandatory for the HD DVD spec. Also the deleted scenes on Superman Returns were in HD.

They are all HDMI, and can decode advance audio? Sweet! I know what I'm looking for this Christmas.

Read the HTF mission statement:

"Our goal is to enjoy the movie-going experience at home, without sacrificing artistic integrity. We expect the original film and sound formats to be preserved on home video, and embrace the home video formats (like DVD) that allow this to be possible."

Lossless sound is one of the formats I would like to be preserved on home video. Trust me. I no longer buy any Blu-ray discs that don't include lossless sound as an option. The same would hold true for HD-DVD

As for sour grapes, my credit card is in hand ready to buy the Samsung dual format player once it goes on sale (yes, I plan on going neutral). So enough of those cheap shots. That's something I expect at the "other forum."

I didn't say anything about sour grapes. You were talking about replicating the theatrical experience. I was just pointing out that even standard DVD has the theatrical experience beat when it comes to the quality of the sound. The original sound format in 90% of theaters across the U.S. is Dolby Digital at 320kbps.

Also that's what the engineers and the director hear in the final mix of a movie. The original sound stems are put through a real time Dolby Digital encoder at 320kbps so that they can hear what the audience will hear in the theater.
