I ended 2004 with a bunch of older films (including 3 Kurosawas), so I thought I'd start 2005 with some newer films:

Shaun Of The Dead - I realy enjoyed this...There was an above and beyond the call of duty approach to the film. Yeah, it was simple comedy about zombies, but it was also very clever, had plenty of references to other films and was directed very well. I particularly liked the long tracking shot of Shaun's trip to the corner store in the morning that was repeated the following day (when many more zombies were out). I expect I will end up buying this.

Napoleon Dynamite - Though it has been accused of being quirky just for the sake of being quirky, I don't see it that way. There are exaggerations to characters, but the spirit of them I think remains true. Nope, I don't know anyone exactly like Napoleon, but as I think back to high school I do remember a number of people that, well, moved to their own dance beat...And I think that's what it's about. Finding your own space and friends that allow you to be yourself. The humour will definitely hit people in different ways, but I appreciated the "stuck in 1982" when everyone else is living in the present angle.

Garden State - 3 for 3. I loved the relationship built up between the Zach Braff and Natalie Portman characters. Very gentle and touching. I look forward Zach Braff furthering his movie career on the writing/directing side.

The Battle of Algiers (1966)

Viewed 1/5/2005

Gillo Pontecorvo's still-relevant docudrama details Algeria's battle for independence from French colonial rule. Are the tactics used by the rebels terrorism? Could the French have handled the situation better? Have we learned anything from the situation? Hmmmm.

Kudos to Criterion's release, which is loaded with insightful extras. :emoji_thumbsup:

Intimate Strangers (2004)

Viewed 1/5/2005 (first viewing)

Not a straight to video sex romp as the title would indicate, but a psychological drama from Patrice Leconte (The Man on the Train). A tax lawyer becomes the confidant to a troubled woman when she mistakes him for an analyst. Though she soon discovers the truth, she continues to seek his counsel, drawing him deeper into her world of twisted relationships.

Rio Bravo -- I first saw it about three years ago, and while I definitely enjoyed it, I wasn't blown away. After getting the DVD as a holiday gift, I watched it again and immediately appreciated why it's so highly regarded among so many cinema lovers. Peter Bogdanovich described it in his most recent book as "the shortest 141 minutes in picture history," and it's tough to argue with that. The story just hums along, with practically every scene striking the perfect note. The only one that doesn't seem to work perfectly is the final shoot-out, which succeeds as a very entertaining climax, but it's also a bit too tongue-in-cheek with all the needling going on between the heroes.

Anyway, the most amazing thing to me about this movie is how hard it is to pinpoint what makes it so great. Good characters and good performances (and Ricky Nelson isn't much more than OK), but no all-time greats. Lots of good shots and effective editing, but is there anything that obviously ranks among the great moments in cinema? Maybe the first shot of John Wayne, up from the floor and at an angle from Dean Martin's point-of-view, certainly among the most memorable entrances of Wayne's career, but nothing else springs to mind right away. And yet it all works at an incredible level, the whole being much greater than the sum of its (already pretty good) parts. Howard Hawks must have worked some sort of invisible magic to pull this one off as well as he did.

Quentin Tarantino has always ranked this among his favorite movies (often citing it as one of his top three), and one thing I noticed for the first time is that the scene in the saloon, where Dude and Chance take on Burdette's men, has a bit of dialogue that was pretty clearly referenced in Pulp Fiction. After Dude pulls off his impressive feat, one of the other guys starts reaching for his own gun, but Chance points his rifle at him and says (something like): "You want that gun, pick it up. I wish you'd try." QT undoubtedly had that in mind when Butch taunts Zed in Pulp Fiction (paraphrase): "You want that gun, don't you, Zed? Go ahead, pick it up. I want you to."

RIO BRAVO is one of my favorite flims. In addition to being a good story, it has a special quality to it that is very difficult for me to put into words. I can never seem to lose sight of the fact that I'm watching a group of well known actors on a movie set. They all appear to be having a great time playing their roles. For example, there is one scene near the end of the film between Dean Martin and Walter Brennan. Brennan, who is priceless in his role as "Stumpy," is off on one of his "nobody worries about how I feel " rants and Martin is just sitting there watching him. He then starts to lose it and begins laughing. At that point, I keep expecting Martin to look up and make direct eye contact with the camera. To me, it's Dean Martin the actor reacting to Walter Brennan's performance, rather than him reacting to the moment in the context of the film. It's just a wonderful moment...one of many in the film. Again, it's difficult for me to put into words the feeling I get watching this film.

One of the all-time great westerns!

I didn't know Tokyo S.O.S. was out on DVD. I added it to my Netflix list. Can't get enough of the Mothra chicks: Mosura-AH...Mosura-AH!!. Already got my 3 year old hooked. He watched G vs. Gigan yesterday.

Intimate Strangers was one of my favorite films of 2004. Fabrice Luchini, unknown to many here, but superb in several of Eric Rohmer's best films, is outstanding in the lead role.

Then again, I was bored out of my skull by Garden State, which is a top 10'er for many here.

Just an update on some things I've seen since I've added my first fourteen movies to the list and I've nowhere else to post these comments:

Battle Royale - third time I've seen this film, third translation I've seen, this one is about the second best, second time I've seen the director's cut, I prefer the theatrical cut, because the dreams at the end just really disrupt the flow of the ending of the film in an extremely annoying way. This film continues to maintain its power and greatness for me, there's no question of this holding up or being a product of the times because its about people, communities, and friendship--not headlines. One of my favorite films of all time and it will remain that way.

Six Feet Under Season 2 Episode 1 overall solid but disapointing especially following the wonderful final episode of the first season, makes me not want to continue into the season although I know it will get better I'm also getting a bit fed up with the melodramatic silliness that sometimes drives this show.

His and Her Circumstances Episodes 1-6 (vol 1). I absolutely DEVOURED this incredible and perfect TV show. It's not for everyone but two minutes into the actual episode I knew I was in trouble and that my ass wouldn't be moving until the dvd was finished. And I loved it so much I went through every bit of the special features and was inspired by the journal to go watch the first episode in the English dub. I definitely prefer the Japanese because with English the enthusiasm comes off a little too over the top and disconcerting.

The animation style is nothing short of sensationally brilliant.

I will admit having my first girlfriend be a lot like the main character (except for the obsessing about popularity and image thing) really enhanced my enjoyment of the show. But this gets my highest recommendation, as good as Cowboy Bebop but completely different in the way that Renoir is nothing like Lucas. :)

Yeah the Renoir of anime, I LIKE that analogy.

OARDVD (1.77:1 flat edition)

One of my favorite musicals, it’s just so much fun to sit through and enjoy. Great rip roaring sing along songs, fabulous dance sequences and just outrageous enough to keep you grinning and gasping with delight. I think I prefer the cinemascope version because some compositions felt a little tight but there were other times such as the first rendition of “When You’re in Love” that worked better than the cinemascope version (which can at times feel too wide such as in that sequence). Brilliant, wonderful, funny, glorious musical!

So many classics, so few seen...Not a bad problem to have I suppose.

The Lady Eve - Barbara Stanwyck sure is purty...Although I found some awkward moments in the film (the humour didn't always work for me, some of the monologues felt forced, etc.), I still quite enjoyed this (my first Preston Sturges film). The monologue Stanwyck speeds through while watching all of Henry Fonda's potential love interests through a mirror doesn't feel natural at all, but the words spilling out are quite sharp and very well composed. So although some of the scenes felt odd, I really enjoyed the script. Stanwyck just radiates through the film (sigh...) and really digs into her role and lines. There's a great scene where she is trying to protect Fonda from her father's attempt to cheat him at cards. It continues back and forth at a brisk pace and is very clever. I never really bought Fonda in the role and actually ended up disliking him a bit near the end when he
dumps Stanwyck's Lady Eve character simply because she had been with other men before (OK, lots of other men, but still...).

But overall I enjoyed the fast pace of the plot and script. Oh, and Barbara Stanwyck is gorgeous. Did I mention that?

Beauty And The Beast - Lovely telling of the classic tale. In particular the scenes at Beast's castle are beautiful and very creative. The Beast's magic comes through in the coming to life of many objects (candle holders, statues, etc.). Brillantly realized - especially since this was 1946. Though I don't know much about Jean Cocteau, I believe this was only his second film and for him to have this kind of command of the visual elements is quite remarkable.

Charade - Great flick! Zips along at a jaunty pace and keeps the plot shifting. The trailer stating that the film is part thriller, part romance and part comedy is quite accurate and I felt that none of those elements was short shrifted. Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant ooze charm and once again the banter is witty, sharp and very quick. Lots of fun. And Audrey Hepburn sure is purty...

Oh, and Adam is right...Battle Royale is freaking great.

Bob, glad you enjoyed Lady Eve and Charade, those are two favorites for me, especially Lady Eve. Barbara Stanwyck wasn't a classic beauty, but she was HOT in that movie.

I also see you caught Kind Hearts and Coronets for the first time, another personal fave. I got the Alec Guinness collection when it came out two years ago on a mostly blind buy (the only one of the five I'd seen was The Ladykillers, on a shambolically awful VHS tape), and I ended up watching Kind Hearts four times since then, as many times as any other movie in that time span!

Fun fact about that movie: the music that keeps recurring in different forms--sung by his father, played on the piano by his mother, among other places--is a famous aria from Mozart's Don Giovanni, and (this is the fun fact) notice how the lyrics reflect Louis' quest to avenge his mother.

Yeah, I kind of forgot about that...I liked it, but I think I need another viewing. First of all, I watched it in two parts and I think I lost the thread somewhere. I also didn't latch on to the humour as much as I thought I should. Alec Guinness is great and I like dark humour, but something just wasn't really clicking for me (it may have been the main character himself). I expect there were a number of things I missed, so I'll catch this again sometime. I liked Ladykillers a great deal, so I'll continue through the rest of the Ealings with Guinness...

Saw a couple of so-so films tonight.

Stupidity was a decent doc about human intelligence and how society and the media sometimes make that seem overrated. Some good interviews and points are made, but since so many scenes are "performed" or redone by their own actors (I assume to save on rights issues for clips from movies/videos/etc.) that the entertainment aspect is lost somewhat. As well, it was quite scattered and didn't really feel like it came together in the end.

Saved! was enjoyable enough for a thumbs up, but it still had some problems. Things derail a bit in the last 20 minutes and there's a prom confrontation that spoils things a bit (but don't worry, lessons are learned!). There was enough humour, charm and even bits of well placed insight in the rest of the movie to save it though.

Playful Pluto (1934) B

Fun spited Disney short has Mickey cleaning his yard only to have a playful Pluto destroy it. The visual look is quite nice and there are a few good jokes including one with Pluto playing with a water hose.

Mickey’s Steam Roller (1934) B-

Mickey and his steam roller destroy the city and helps calm Minnie’s and her(?) two kids. Visually entertaining but not too much comedy.

Shock, The (1923) :star::star::star:1/2

Lon Chaney plays a cripple who has been used by a Chinatown gang to commit various crimes. He’s sent away on his newest job where he falls in love with a girl but it turns out his job is to kill her father. As usual, Chaney gives a remarkable performance and I have no problem calling him one of the greatest actors ever. He perfectly captures all the right emotions for the role and his physical appearance of a cripple is remarkable. Two other highlights include a bank being blown up and an earthquake that happens in the film. The special effects are very good and the suspense and drama are very high.

Mickey Plays Papa (1934) B

A baby mouse is left at Mickey’s doorstep so he and Pluto must decide how to take care of it. This is a somewhat cute short, which features Mickey doing an impression of Charles Chaplin that’s kind of funny.

Mickey’s Kangaroo (1935) B-

A kangaroo shows up at Mickey’s house and goes on a rampage tearing up everything that gets in his way.

In the Heat of the Night (1967) :star::star::star::star:

One of the all time classics about a black Northern cop (Sidney Poitier) going to the racist south to try and crack a murder case. This is a film that has so many classic scenes that it’s hard to believe anyone wouldn’t really love the movie. The way we’re introduced to Poitier is one such scene and another happens at a certain point when Poitier slaps an important person. Rod Steiger is also terrific in his role as the sheriff. The actual mystery is a lot of fun and you can’t help but root for Poitier in these situations.

Haunted House, The (1929) B

Mickey’s out in the middle of nowhere during a storm so he takes shelter in a house, which just happens to be haunted. This is a fairly good short that basically has Mickey being forced to play the piano while the ghouls and goblins dance to it. The locking door gag is the best part.

Moose Hunt, The (1931) B

Mickey and Pluto go out looking for a moose but when they find him it’s different than what they thought. The gag with Mickey confusing Pluto with a moose is the highlight and the flees joke is well done too.

Film Fan, The (1939) A-

Porky Pig, on the way to the market, passes by a theater and decides to go in for some fun. This is a pretty good film that shows the enjoyment of movies. There are some good spoofs of popular films released at the time including Gone With the Wind. The ending is very funny as well.

Gunga Din (1939) :star::star::star::star:

Classic tale of three British soldiers and their water boy Gunga Din who must stop a group of killers from terrorizing India. Gary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Victor McLaglen all give wonderful performances but it’s Sam Jaffe who really steals the show. Although there are a few slow moments director George Stevens manages to throw all sorts of goodies into this film. Action, drama, adventure and some wonderful suspense make this highly rewarding.

Out of the Past (1947) :star::star::star::star:

Jeff Bailey (Robert Mitchum) has his past catch up to him when a millionaire (Kirk Douglas) and his girl (Jane Greer) try to frame him for a murder. This classic noir is one of the all time greats due in large part to Mitchum’s superb performance in one of the definitive detective roles. The film is full of twist and turns but the screenplay is a classic thanks to the wonderful dialogue.

Rear Window (1954) :star::star::star::star:

A photographer (James Stewart) is stuck in a wheelchair due to a broken leg. He sits in front of his window all night and day spying on his neighbors when he begins to think one of them might have murdered his wife. This was my first time viewing this film in over a decade and this might have become my favorite Hitchcock behind Psycho. I loved the slow pace that helps gets us more involved in the case and in some ways the slower pace can help us identify with Stewart’s character who can’t really move at all. Grace Kelly and Raymond Burr are great but once again it’s Stewart who steals the show. The final five minutes are incredibly intense as well.

Touch of Evil (1958) 112-min. version

A Mexican narcotics officer (Charlton Heston) clashes with an American detective (Orson Welles) and soon finds himself being set up. While the story is lacking in a few areas there’s no denying the impact this film had on many of the filmmakers that would follow. The opening sequence could be the greatest ever put to film and the use of lighting and the cinematography can’t be touched. Heston and Janet Leigh are good but this is Welles show all the way.

Cool It Baby (1965) :star::star:

Somewhat entertaining sexploitation film about a couple who drug girls into making adult films and then blackmail them into joining their sexual club. For a sexploitation flick the movie is pretty tame, which is somewhat strange. The story isn’t too bad and there are some pretty girls but not much else. The site of the courtroom used in the film will get a few laughs.

OK I could have sworn that I had a RESERVED post but it's nowhere to be found, so I'll start a new one. Sorry guys.

Anyway.

**** EXCELLENT
*** GREAT
** OK

0 WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT?!?!

January

I, Robot (2004) **** This was an excellent, action packed telling of "what if" robots were used as day to day "buddies" coinciding with humans, helping us with daily tasks. Then, "what if" that went wrong? REALLY REALLY great! More than just a summer popcorn flick!

Spanglish (2004] *** 1/2 This movie is told from the point of view of the maids daughter, which is an interesting take. The movie is actually very touching, with VERY strong performances over all. Cloris Leachman turns in a VERY funny & VERY touching performance. I was very surprised at how much I liked this movie. I'm also VERY shocked at how much I've used VERY in this review ;-)

Phantom Of The Opera (2004) *** While Evita really jumpstarted the whole neo-musical movement, Moulin Rouge made it an artform & Chicago started the renaissance, Phantom of the Opera doesn't do much to move the movement along. It's beautiful to look at, and is very very enjoyable, but there are a few parts it drags on a bit. It's certainly not as tightly edited any of the prior 3. The leads are all very strong. The biggest complaint is Minnie Driver, who doesn't sing her own vocals. What is the point of being cast in a musical if you're not going to sing. Surely there are other people in Hollywood who could have portrayed Carlotta and actually sang.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Ziszou (2004) ***1/2 This is tied with The Royal Tenembaums as my favourite Wes Anderson film. It is quite rich in its depth, dry humour and understated wit. The performances are all very strong. I think you really have to "get" Wes Anderson films. You either do or you don't. Most of the people in the theater came out of their saying things like "That was horrible" or "I thought Bill Murray was going to be funny". I know this, because I made sure to listen to their conversations :) In any event, those were the people who just didn't "get it". The animated, actually, stop motion sequences were brilliant, and the sets were fantastical, which I expect from Anderson. I loved this movie and hope it gets the RT treatment on DVD.

White Noise (2005) **** - Very creepy & moody! Michael Keaton turns in an excellent performance as a recently widowed father who discovers EVP & believes his wife is contacting him. The film is wonderful and does what its supposed to do: creep you out!

Murder My Sweet (1944) :star::star::star::star:1/2 (9/10)

The Big Sleep (1946) :star::star::star::star::star: (10/10)

Troy (2004) :star::star::star:1/2 (7/10)
What are your expectations when you choose to watch a Sword & Sandals Epic? For the most part it delivers a rousing action spectacle. Brad Pitt is a bit out of his element as the larger than life Achilles, however the standout performance comes from Eric Bana as Hector. If you go in with reasonable expectations & are just looking for a diverting evening of escapist entertainment aimed at adults this is definitely worth a rental at least.

Spartacus (1960) :star::star::star::star:1/2 (9/10)

The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934) :star::star::star: (6/10)
Leslie Howard stars in the title role as the 18th century British daring doer who rescues French aristocrats from the guillotine. This one just doesn’t reach the heights of other noted 30’s/40’s Swashbucklers such as Adventures of Robin Hood, Gunga Din, Beau Geste, Mark of Zorro, Sea Hawk, Captain Blood, etc.

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) :star::star::star::star::star: (10/10)

The Three Stooges in Orbit (1962) :star: :star:
I'm a big fan of their comedies, be they shorts or features, and whether they feature Curly, Shemp, Joe Besser or Joe DeRita. But this is one of the weakest things the Stooges have ever done. It's just not very funny, and there is a lot of filler thrown in to pad out the running time, such as an inexplicable romance for a couple of unimportant side characters.

The Monster that Challenged the World (1957) :star: :star: :star:

A good, solid fifties monster movie about deadly gigantic crustaeceans terrorizing humans on both land and sea. The monsters are good and there are interesting human characters (Hans Conried is very good as the doctor) and fine ocean shots, one of which pre-dates JAWS when a female casualty meets her watery demise. Some creepy ravaged corpses for the time, too.
