I was watching A Bug's Life and was suddenly struck by the similarity to Seven Samurai. So I decided to do a tourney of such films. They can be serious or comic takes, but the basic idea has to be emmissaries from a group seeking out help to deal with bullies of some sort. Simply list all the films you want to nominate, and the ones with the most votes will be in and seeded highest.

I'll start with the six I can think of:

    Seven Samurai
    Magnificent Seven
    Three Amigos
    A Bug's Life
    Galaxy Quest
    Yellow Submarine

To me those are all clear cut examples. I'm going to be a little bit flexible, but not much on variation from the theme. So I'm also nominating the following two, even though they're a bit iffier

Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom (the villagers didn't exactly go out looking for help)

The Fifth Element (help was already on the way)

Again, just to be clear, list all the movies you want to vote for to be in the tourney, regardless of whether anyone else has already listed them.

I've thought of this very topic before in the past (as obscure as it may seem), and I always think of 5 films. All 5 appear on your list of 6, so I can't offer any new ones though.

The mistaken identity take on Seven Samurai is pretty popular, and I love all three films which use it comedically - Galaxy Quest, A Bug's Life, Three Amigos. [IMG]

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Not sure if these are precisely what you're looking for, but I'd vote for:

    Pale Rider
    Unforgiven
    Tombstone
    The Wild Bunch

How about: we're lowly Hobbits with a Ring problem:

    LOTR: FOTR

We're lowly Old Republicans with an Empire problem:

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope

The Wizard of Oz kinda fits... except they don't go "seeking" for help.

Man this is a tough one. How about Army of Darkness, Sleepy Hollow or maybe The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

Also, there are probably a few Three Stooges shorts that would fit the bill.

    Gon stole mine. [IMG]

Would the Planet of the Apes remake count? Does 'I'll inspire you all to rise up against your aggressors' mean the same thing as a Bully Problem? If so, you could count the also unnecessary remake of The Time Machine...

    Would Gladiator then? Nah...

    Braveheart certainly...

Howzabout "Bart Goes to War" from Season 1? [IMG]

    The Magnificent Seven?

Tears of the Sun looks like it would be eligible. Obviously its not out yet.

Ooh, I think The Matrix should count!

I think I'm going to make this an 8 film tourney. Here's my thoughts right now.

    Films that fit well -

    Seven Samurai
    Magnificent Seven
    Three Amigos
    A Bug's Life
    Galaxy Quest
    Yellow Submarine

Films that don't quite fit -

Star Wars (Leia, then R2 going looking for help for the rebels who are being bullied by Darth and the Death Star, but the rebels do fight on their own, they're just outmatched)

Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom (the village isn't being bullied except by bad luck and they didn't send someone for help)

The Fifth Element (although Earth is out of it's league, it's too militaristic to be the helpless village)

Unforgiven (they aren't exactly being bullied anymore by the people they've put a contract on)

Lord of the Rings (the Hobbits aren't emissaries of Hobbiton which has never even heard of the 'bully'. I suppose Boromir could be seeking help, but Minas Tirith isn't exactly a helpless village)

Ones that I can't see how they fit -

Some of these I haven't seen, some it's been too long, and some I'm just not seeing the parallels you are. So please, if you think one of these fits, give us an explanation of how. Remember,

    1) Helpless group
    2) sends for help
    3) because they are being bullied

    Tombstone
    High Plains Drifter
    Pale Rider
    The Wild Bunch
    The Wizard of Oz
    Battle Beyond the Stars
    Army of Darkness
    Sleepy Hollow
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
    My Bodyguard
    The Matrix
Bart Goes to War (if it fits better than any of these others, I wouldn't be opposed to it.)
    Braveheart
    Gladiator
    Planet of the Apes
    The Time Machine

As I said, I'm going to pick the 8 the best fit (right now we've got 6 clear ones, and I'm leaning towards Star Wars & Temple of Doom for the other two, but I'd like to hear arguments for others. In any case, the tourney itself will start sometime this week (I want to leave the selection of the final 8 until Monday to hear from those who dial-in from work).

    George,

You should probably consider Battle Beyond the Stars as it is a clear and intentional 're-imagining' of the old Seven Samurai / Magnificent Seven vibe:

Young hero sets out into the far reaches of the galaxy to find a collection of heroes who can help protect his doomed planet from evil aliens....

    Scott,

That's one I haven't seen, but based on your description, it'll probably make it in.

Yep, Battle Beyond the Stars is a redo of Seven Samurai.

This one is iffy, but: Conan the Barbarian. Thulsa Doom is terrorizing the countryside so Conan and company go in to stop him. Granted, Conan is looking for revenge as well...

Okay, I'll explain the ones I mentioned. (And by the way, they should really be taken as mentions rather than nominations.) Anyway, none of them really fits exactly.

Army of Darkness Ash comes from the future, gets trapped in the past. While he's there, he helps the locals beat an army of the living dead. They don't go looking for help, but they do ask for it once he's there. So you have a helpless group being bullied by the living dead, and they ask the outsider for help.

Sleepy Hollow The headless horseman has been bullying the helpless people of Sleepy Hollow by cutting their heads off. I don't know if they sent for help or not, but New York cop Ichabod Crane is assigned the case. He comes in and fights the horseman for them.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Liberty Valance bullies the people of the town. They don't send for help. However, Jimmy Stewart ambles into town and stands up to the bully. This one is really pretty flimsy.

So none of these is 100% what you're looking for, but they all have a group of helpless bully victims who rely on an outsider for help.

If you want movies that really follow the prescribed formula, these are listed on the IMDB as remakes of Seven Samurai:

    Magnificent Seven, The (1960)
    Zhan shen tan (1973)
    Battle Beyond the Stars (1980)
    ¡Three Amigos! (1986)
    Dune Warriors (1990)
    Dikij vostok (1993)
    Bug's Life, A (1998)
    China Gate (1998)
    Galaxy Quest (1999)

OK, the following are going to be the 8 films:

    Seven Samurai
    Magnificent Seven
    Three Amigos
    A Bug's Life
    Galaxy Quest
    Yellow Submarine
    Battle Beyond the Stars
    Star Wars

    I'm seeding them randomly.

    Up first,

    Yellow Submarine vs. Galaxy Quest

I would choose the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album over either movie, but here I'll have to go with Galaxy Quest.
