A tournament dedicated to past events and their place in human history. Events that greatly affected history are what we're going for here. Any event is eligible as long as it's a serious event; I don't think the release of Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace would get very far. [IMG]
3 nominations and 3 seconds per participant.
Hopefully we'll come up with a 64-team bracket.
Dates aren't necessarily mandatory but they help place the event. If anyone does know the dates for some of the nominees, I'll be glad to add them.
One more thing: Some events may be religious or political, that's just human nature. Let's keep deep discussion of such events out of this tournament. Here's to a smooth tourney!
    I'll start us off:
    What's in
December 7, 1941: Japanese bomb Pearl harbor
July 23, 1969: Man lands on the Moon
August (?), 1492: Columbus discovers America
October 31, 1517: Martin Luther posts his 95 Theses
1864: Louis Pasteur's contribution of Biogenesis
June 28, 1914: Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
    Neolithic Revolution
1450: Invention of the printing press
1879: Thomas A. Edison invents electric light
June 6, 1944: Operation Overlord: Allied invasion of Normandy, France
    August, 1945: Bombing of Hiroshima/Nagasaki
July 16, 1945: First atomic bomb explosion @ Trinity Site, NM
    Fall of the Roman Empire
    18th Century: Industrial Revolution
    1776/1781: American Revolution
Formulation of the Big Bang theory
1687: Formulation of "classical" physics by Newton
662 AD: Mohammed flees from Mecca to Medina (the Hegira)
November 22, 1963: President John F. Kennedy assassinated
October 4, 1957: The launch of Sputnik - first satellite in orbit
    Needing a second:

1831-1836: Formulation of Darwin's Theory of Evolution
New Zealand becomes first country in the world to grant women the vote. 1893
September 11, 2001: World Trade Center towers destroyed by terrorists' attacks
    1861-1865: Civil War
1215/1297 AD: King John signs the Magna Carta
    1789-1793: French Revolution
    1950's: Colonialism abolished
Reformation* has been seconded but needing verification from Justin.
December 28, 1895 - the first public exhibition of a motion picture by the Lumiere brothers, thus the birth of film
April 12, 1961: Yuri Gagarin's launch - first man to leave the earth

No doubt. Please, let's confine this to facts, people. Feel free to nominate the creation of Christianity, but leave out the rest.
Assuming this thread still exists, my nominations:
The invention of the printing press
The invention of "classical" physics, by Isaac Newton
    The Big Bang [IMG]

Andrew_Sch: Neolithic Revolution? This is one of the main reasons I'm doing this, to learn. What is this? It may be a little too broad like the a nomination from...
DonaldB: The advent of agriculture had many specific creations/ideas - the invention of the plow, crop rotation, etc. A bit more specific and we're in business.
I'd say that the ramifications of 9/11 haven't quite been felt yet but I'll put it down as a nominee and see if it gets seconded.

I'll second the invention of the printing press .
To answer John's question, the Neolithic Revolution was the genesis of agricultural, the period in which people first abandoned the nomadic lifestyle and starting settling and forming the first civilizations.
